An example... rather than provide health care to everybody, why not provide full scholarships for medical students to become doctors with the catch that once they become doctors, they have to spend the first XXX years of practice providing cheap health care to low income families. (This alone wouldn't fix the health care system... just using it as an example.)
Many small, isolated towns do something like this already. They pay for med school and guarantee a certain wage but the doctor has to stay for a certain number of years. Win/win. On a small scale. Large scale might run into problems.

I *believe* the U of MD used to have the following program.. not sure if it's still active but...
If you had a 4 year degree, you could go to the U of MD grad school for free If you agreed to work as a teacher for the state for 4 years. Of course maryland has some really ghetto parts, and they'd always stick you in the middle schools there with kids that never should have made it past the 2nd grade.
Two birds with one stone.. ya get some badly needed teacher and u get a free Master's from a great school

Put the cap per person at 1 trillion US dollars. If the cap is too low they won't do as much philanthropy.

I don't even think it should be at 1 trillion.... I say let people make as much as they want to unless of course their actions are deemed illegal as to how they are making all that money.

But to be more on topic, I think a salary cap is a bad idea, but I DO think that CEOs should be paid less so that lower ranking employees can be paid more. But thats more of a 'how private companies run their business' thing than it is a government policy issue. The government should stay out of salary regulation, but private industry should do a better job of regulating itself when it comes to sharing the wealth with the team in a corporate context.

The only way you can avoid bosses and jobs is if you don't care about making a living. Which leads to the second freedom: the freedom to starve." - Tom Morello

So the $1.00 that many CEOs took for last years pay should be less? Maybe 50 cents, instead?

When you work for a company it's at WILL. No one forces you to work there. The CEO makes what he wants to make.. the employees make a certain amount. There's a simple solution to this. If you don't like how much the CEO of a company makes and how little the workers make.. then DON'T WORK THERE. No one puts a gun to your head and tells you where to work. This isn't a communist country.
In this country you're free to work where you want. You're free to try to better your situation by starting your own business and you're free to try to go to school to change careers if you don't think you're getting paid enough.
I'm all for minimum wage. If we didn't have one there'd be TOO many people out on the streets because if it were up to some companies you'd only get paid a buck an hour. Minimum wage is as far as I go.
After that... If you're going to start dictating that the people who busted their ass THEIR ENTIRE LIVES to get where they are can only make so much so the people who SLACKED OFF HALF THEIR LIVES and are busting their asses now can make more money... then why don't we just scrap this whole country... wipe out the stars and stripes on our flag, paint the whole thing red and slap a yellow hammer and sickle up there?

please, don't tell me you're falling for the car dealer "I'll give you a good price but jack you on the financing" scam, because thats exactly what this is, except its: "I'll only get a dollar in salary, but I also get millions of shares in stock"
Although there are a lot of CEOs of small companies that work their ass off and get paid dick, there are also many ceos that are basically figureheads whose job is to play golf and schmooze with big clients.
My girlfriend's father is the CFO of a major company. He gets paid maybe a quarter mil a year to basically run this company. The CEO, his boss, is a good-ol-boy who graduated college with a 2.0, knows jack shit, got his job through nepotism, does nothing for the company but schmooze on the golf course, and gets paid millions.
so yes, there are two sides to every story. There's the hardworking CEO that gets paid dick, and the lazy fuckup CEO that gets overpaid.
