Actually, the soul is the mind-body. The spirit or sometimes 'nous' depending upon the Latin or Greek theorist is added to complete a tripartite human nature.

In Kabbalistic thinking, the 'soul' forms the physical, mental, emotional and instinctual 'edifice,' called The Astral Triangle. Above that is another triad comprised of the essential awareness or Witness (Ethical Triangle) which the lower triangle (soul) 'seems' to possess as individual consciousness.

The Ethical Triangle (or spirit), when detached from the Astral Triangle (soul), Realizes its Ultimate Identity as being indistinguishable from the uppermost triad, the Supernal Triangle, which is God. Above God is the tripartite Godhead (Eternal Light, Eternity, and '.' designated by no word at all).

Thus, soul is our mind-body, spirit is the consciousness which underlies the soul, and God is the Transcendental Consciousness. In this model, there is a descent into manifestation and an ascent to the Unmanifest.

Nothing "swoops."

So it doesn't need the body to exist, it simply uses it.

But it appears that yes, the soul certainly does use the body

Then why do most not want to die? Unless we consider that the ego is seperate from the soul and, instead, attached to the body. If a soul was simply a parasite, wouldn't it have no preference on whether its host lived or died, especially if we consider that the soul was in 'existence' before it entered our bodies.

Ever heard of soul braiding or Walk-ins?.  It is sort of soul exchange, wherein an advanced soul takes up residence in a body for a temporary period with the willing cooperation of the main soul of the body..

From a website on Soul braiding.

Quote:

This is what soul braiding is all about. The process is always done with the cooperation and willingness of the "main soul" expression inhabiting the body. Perhaps this agreement was made before the original soul entered the body, either at birth or as a walk-in. Or, perhaps the soul in the body needs information or experience for a particular purpose and asks for help. The request may be answered by a soul who agrees to provide a part of its expression for this purpose. In turn, it will increase its own experience through this act. The energy from the incoming soul comes in through the top of the head in a spiraling downward process, hence the term soul braiding.

Eventually down and out.

According to popular mythology, a soul swoops into our body upon birth and then leaves at the point of death.

It sounds like an opportunistic entity only concerned with it's own well-being, i.e. a parasite.

There may be something to get out of life, even for a soul, not only a body.
Perhaps the feeling to be only a body. Including the (simple) pleasures and displeasures of  body-life.
Or the knowledge, that the body is with it (the soul) in it's own purpose.
Or simply the knowledge of Independence of it's own origin
It's the enjoyment of (somehow independent) existence which lures the soul into body, in general. IMHO.
[But there may be some much higher control instances upon this process, as well  This whole life could be a huge 'arena' for the soul to be 'tested' in a 'partial' state of existence, similar to Plato's cave-'picture', controlled by some principles and truths going on behind the curtain, which our 'soul' ought to 'know', but were hidden before our immediate conscious eyesight.]

really the soul is an extension of your body like a base ball bat, see how they evolve, the mind is your spirit or subconcience, the parasite is the seed or work of the angels, gods, or Jesus

the parasites are excited when you're dead
eyes bulging, entering your head.
and all your thoughts, they rot.
god and satan they gamble when you're dead
beams of light, one sprite, the other's bourbon instead
and all your thoughts, they rot.
it was hot and time was stickin to my skin.
we're all a punchline to a joke that they won't let us in on.
and all your thoughts, they rot.

i went to the library today after walking through the woods

i scanned a bookshelf for about 10 seconds before a bright yellow book popped out at me. everything in it is preparing me for the next step in my life.

things just happen the way they are suppose to, that is the soul to me. everything right now is pointing in one direction, all the people and things in my life come out of the intention.

if you suffered from a bad childhood, it's never too late to change and grow. that's the soul

i gotta go now, i'll be back later

That's not the soul silly. That's life. We choose how to view it. Take everything as something you need or as a problem. You were looking for something to feed your beliefs and you found it of course. Had that book not done it you would have forgot that "failure" and moved on until you could focus on something that did feed your beliefs. That's your brain at work. The sole is the thing that protects your feet on the way to the library.

Why are people so invested in magical thinking; that's the real question here.
