The Invisible Landscape (terence and dennis mckenna)
Chapter 6
"...We also had occasion to ingest synthetic tryptamines and had observed as a regular feature of the tryptamine intoxication a peculiar audile phenomenon. This is a very faint, but definetely perceivable, harmonic overtone of varying pitch and frequency that seems to emanate from inside ths skull while one is under the influence of tryptamines; the exact nature of this harmonic tone eludes precise verbal description, as it varies in quality and amplitude during the course of the tryptamine experience, first manifesting itself as an extremely faint sound on the very edge of audibility, rather akin to the sound that might proceed rom distant wind chimes. This sound gradually increases in volume a very few minutes after it is percieved, taking on an electric, buzzing quality that might be compared in some respects to whistling wind or running water. Understandably, one might be inclined to classify this sound as merely an audile hallucination induced by the psychoactive agent, were it not for the fact that it exhibits several specific and regularly noticeable features that would seem to set it apart from the class of hallucinated auditory phenomena, sometimes reported in literature dealing with psychedelics. One such feature is the specific association of this phenomenon with the ingestion of hallucinogens with structures close to tryptamine, that is, the psilocybin-DMT compounds and harmine-tetrahydoharmine complex found in Banisteriopsis caapi and B. rusbyana. The reports of similar phenomena being noted for mescaline or the lysergamides are rare; while, according to the Naranjo, approximately 50 percent of the subjects under the influence of ayahuasca commonly experience an extremely loud buzzing sound, emanating from the interior of the skull, during the course of the experience. Individual reports of the subjectively perceived phenomenon exhibit a high degree of similarity."
I believe they eventually conclude that they are hearing the electron spin resonance of their own DNA.
They also believe they were contacted by an ancient intelligence residing within the mushrooms they were finding, that revealed to them much of their current knowledge. I believe that happened to me too, though.

Try some 4-HO-Mipt And you will definitely hear the machines. Usually the machine noise is accompanied by incredible closed eye morphing organic machine structures. Also I get a pressure on my sinuses and cheekbones when the sounds are at their strongest.
This is why I always trip alone and quiet. I love to explore the internal topographies. Complete with soundtrack.

I'll try to describe it, its a real twangy effect like a guitar would have but drawn out and the tone changes.
Weeeeawwwwwooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwhhhuuurrrrrr.
Similar to the sound you get on a large hit of nitrous but not so fast, for me nitrous would be like wahhwahhwahhwahhhwahhwahhh really quick and metallic like. This has a more earthy sound. A flange effect per se, and its continuously changing, never staying the same pitch but always fairly low on the scale never high pitched.
The place the sound is coming from is not able to be pinpointed, its just coming from all around me but i find it grows louder if i stare into the sky. Anyone else get a similar effect?
i got almost the exact same thing... the fact that it is sourceless makes it really strange. not in a bad way. just in a takes-a-few-minutes-to-realize-what-has-happened kind of way.
next time i shall see if staring at the sky makes a difference for me too. perhaps that effect has something to do with the ear's role in determining up and down?
more power to the mystic shroom vibrations!

I hear this any time it's quiet. It's pretty much constant, I think, it's just more audible at some times than others. It's definitely louder if I sit and try to listen to it, less so if I'm ignoring it.
Really anytime there's not some kind of background noise I hear it.

This is a fascinating topic,
On my last trip when i started to peak i tried to go to sleep as i was physically knackered. I had the most intense closed eye visuals and some very frightening imagery.
Then i started to hear some very fucked up noises that scared the hell out of me, kinda like in that video of the guys face morphing, those kinda sounds, organic bubbling, rippling. I can play it back in my head!! That trip was nuts!
The sounds didnt match up to backgrown noises.
A previous trip had some weird audio effects, like audio going out of sync while watching tv, characters stuttering, and everynow and then the characters would splurt out giberish.
Maybe its because im a sound engineer, and have a slightly more well tuned ears, but for me anyway shrooms play havoc on my hearing.

I get the sound sometimes, but only on very high doses. The first time I heard this sound was when I took grams of mushrooms with 4 grams of syrian rue. About 10 minutes after ingesting my mushrooms I started to notice this sound. It was a buzzing noise. At first it was just one pitch and wasn't all to special. I was watching Waking Life and the noise was really starting to get to me. It was getting to the point where I could not hear the movie because the noise was way too loud.
Well here is where I started to have a bad trip and I ended up telling my friends that they have to leave because I was having paranoid delusions that they were plotting against me behind my back. After they left it was just me and this sound. Once I was alone with this sound I actually started to listen to it, which is what I should have done from the beginning.
Once I started listening it started to sound like some kind of super synth with every imaginable and even unimaginable effects you could ever think of. I think I understand what you are talking about yageman, because I believe that this sound is a fractal too. As you sit and concentrate on the sound you can here more and more layers. Sort of like some crazy shpongle shit x99999999999999999999999. I do believe that the sound is the result of some infinite audio fractal.
This is why I think that the sound starts as something very noisey like a buzz. The layers are so infinite it just sounds like a bunch of noise. But as you focus and tune in the layers start to come out.
I have only gotten the sound once more since that experience and I love to get it. I can just turn off all of the music and sit in silence. But I guess it isn't really silence is it.
~Peace Out

I get the exact same effect here. The way you typed it summed it up pretty perfect actually, it definitely has a flange sort of feel to it, and it's a bit of an airy sound (for me anyways), that stays pretty low. Always fascinated me, and its cool to hear other people have the same sort of thing going on.

The sound is always here and there. Noticing it is just part of the hyper awareness one gains within a trip. Once initially noticed, it may become more accessible.
There are lots of those sounds. More and more come over the years. They make a music.
