Heating Large Pressure Cookers
    #7558724 - 10/25/07 11:03 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I am wondering what I can use inside the lab to heat the larger 41Q AA's.

Lab Hotplate is what I am leaning towards.

Are there any safe propane options that can be used indoors?

How do the indoor gas stoves work safely? I can pipe something outside if I need to. Is the only real safety issue is with the propane tank inside? Why?

Thanks

Why do you want to pressure cook inside the lab? The heat will be unbearable. My flow hood alone raises the temperature in my lab by ten degrees or more after an hour or two. I can't imagine having a pressure cooker running in there.

My lab will be on the 2nd floor, and I don't want to carry a really hot 70lb PC up the stairs, and into the room. =\

I have a little room next to the lab that I can do the cooking in. Really I just want to be able to do it inside, but not in the kitchen.

use an electric griddle.. they go up to 400 degrees and that's plenty (water boils at 230)

Since you've already dropped the cash on the 41 qt All American I think your on the right page with the lab hotplate. Buy one that can do double duty that's a magnetic stirrer too if you don't have one already. Burning propane indoors isn't a good idea unless you can get plenty fresh air in the room. I think (I'm not sure) burning propane produces carbon monoxide and without enough fresh air getting in you might get sick. If you do go with a propane burner you can get 20' hoses to go with them so you can keep the cylinder outside or in another room to reduce the risk of explosion while you PC. I think the propane burner would be cheaper than a lab hot plate. All of the ones I've looked at from online chemistry supply places run between $200 and $300.
