The number of people being treated for drug abuse in the East Midlands has risen by 13 per cent in just one year, figures released this week show.

The data from the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse shows that just over 15,200 people were receiving regular treatment, up from 13,500 last year. The research, produced by Manchester University, found that just over 5,000 new clients stayed on a course of treatment for 12 weeks or more following assessment.

The biggest problem amongst adult drugusers was heroin (70 per cent), followed by methadone or other opiates (11 per cent),cannabis (seven per cent), crack (three per cent), and cocaine (three per cent).

Amongst under-18s, cannabis was found to be the most prevalent drug (76 per cent), followed by heroin or other opiates (nine per cent), cocaine (four per cent) and crack (1 per cent).

Sue Finn, NTA regional manager, said: "More people in the East Midlands are receiving the treatment they need. Drug treatment has developed considerably since 2001, and we are now meeting the challenge to make treatment more effective for the most chaotic and vulnerable individuals, as well as the communities in which they live, in the region.

"Effective drug treatment delivers benefits to individuals, reduces the spread of blood borne viruses such as HIV and hepatitis within the population at large, and improves the safety of communities by reducing drug related crime."

Central government funding for treatment in the East Midlands increased from £27.9 million in 2006/7 to £28.7 million in 2007/8.
