1.new ethernet cable for one. 2. go to the cable company and turn in your old box for a new one. 3. maybe do step 2 before step one, and maybe they will supply you with a new cable as well? bring in the old one. 4. after doing the above, go to dslreports and run all their tests

Do you lose packets to other sites? A traceroute would help tell where the packets are being lost. Have your power cycled your network gear? Usually, when I see partial packet loss, assuming the traceroute shows that it is a local problem, it is due to bad wires somewhere.

yeah i did powercycling, didn't help.
its been fucked up all day, it does this every couple of days too, usually lasts for about a day and a half, then goes back to normal with little flareups at random times.
what is traceroute?
edit: also tried changing the wires, it didn't help (i didn't change the wire going from outside into the cablemodem, just the networking wires).

duplex settings can be responsible for massive packet loss. Check you network card settings and see if it's set to autonegotiate. If it is, try forcing it to 10/HD, 10/FD, 100/HD, 100/FD

what is traceroute?
It's like ping, but it gives you the intermediate pings to each hop along the way rather than just the round trip time to the destination.
In windows, you run it the same way as ping but type "tracert yahoo.com" instead of "ping yahoo.com".

If all else fails, a new NIC may be the answer. I've come across a few machines which have had bad NICS which needed replacing/RMA. This should be the last thing you do when troubleshooting this problem.
