notice all the little insects come in the house when it gets cold, samething happens with all the little bacteria/viruses.
we are the major food source over winter

rapid temperature fluctuations, e.g. moving from a warm house into cold weather and back, causes increased bacterial development.
at least that's what i've heard..

Its a number of things that cause it. I know a major contributor is that with the cold weather, people group together much more. (warmth/indoors) thus germs spread much easier within a group.
I'm sure temperature is involved lowering the immune system.

Actually I think I read somewhere that people in colder climates generally tend to get sick less often and have longer lifespans.
I think people get sick more in the winter because most people spend significantly more time indoors. Thus germs and bacteria spread more readily. It makes sense. I somehow doubt that temperature has much to do with it. I don't think you get sick from being cold... hypothermia maybe... but you usually get sick from viruses and contagious disease. (or vitamin deficiencies..)
In fact you would think that most viruses and germs are more prevalent and spread easier in warmer, more humid climates. Look at some third world countries or places in tropical/swamplike regions and the number of diseases that can spring up. Most bacteria does not like the cold. Of course I could be totally off here... but my theory is that colder = less disease. It's just that in the cold people tend to group up together indoors. And it is general consensus that indoors in most places harbor a lot more bacteria and air pollution and stuff than the outdoors, unless you are a super clean freak. Carpets and beds being a major collector of mold, allergens, microscopic parasites, etc...

all different types of bacteria/viruses live at all different temps. some thrive in cold temps (ex. those that live in your fridge) and some in warm temps; that's why, where we have season change, different illnesses have general seasons
