so everytime I see my cats paw at my couch I am always relieved they're declawed. I tried scratch posts, water bottles, and making noise when I saw them scratch, but it didn't work. All it did was teach them not to claw when I was home.
Personally, every indoor cat I've had has been declawed. They function just the same and I didn't see my cats express any symptoms of being in pain. in fact, they ran and played the next day. I even had a declawed cat who liked to go outside (in a yard while I was outside too) and he could climb trees and he even caught birds and mice.
The way I see it is they can be spoiled cats and have a warm house with toys, food and water... or they could have been left outside at my parent's house where they would have lived under the barn and became feral and survived who knows how long.
My parents do have a couple outside cats who are spade/neutered and they have their claws and they're healthy... but they're strictly outside cats... but before the female got spaded she had a couple litters of kittens... and even though the mommy cat was friendly and tame the kittens were wild and most were killed off. I had to trap my cats and they were wild the first couple days then eventually calmed down and became the spoiled attention h00rs they are now.
now I know this probably opened pandora's box here... so here's a simple poll.

Personally, I dont even like seeing cats forced to stay inside. Cats have free spirits and need to be able to climb trees, chase birds and feel the sun and wind. Forcing a cat to stay inside is like clipping a birds wings and shoving him in a cage.
So yea, dont clip and let the cat go outside.

yeah, i literally live on the service road to a major highway.
their "free spirits" will lead them right to the road... then SPLAT.
yes, in an ideal world letting your cats wonder around in the big world would be awesome. like at my parents, they live out in the country and there's nothing for miles and miles. but unfortunately cars, mean kids, dogs and even leash/stray laws all come with living in town. A cat can't protect itself from any of this, claws or not.
my cats have a huge house with a full basement to play around in and they're happy.

Just like the government restricts our freedom in exchange for safety.
Perhaps they would rather be free and live with some danger then confined to a prison and safe.
