GREAT DUI PREVENTION
    #7557083 - 10/24/07 09:22 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

From the county where drunk driving is considered a sport, comes this true story. Recently a routine police patrol parked outside a bar in punta gorda,Florida after last call the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so apparently intoxicated that he could barely walk.

The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity in which he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to find his car and fall into it. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other
patrons left the bar and drove off.

Finally he started the car, switched the wipers on and off--it was a fine, dry summer night--,flicked the blinkers on and off a couple of times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little and then remained still for a few more minutes as some more of the other patrons' vehicles left. At last, when his was the only car left in the parking lot, he pulled out and drove slowly down the road.

The police officer, having waited patiently all this time, now started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and administered a breathalyser test. To his amazement, the breathalyser indicated no evidence that the man had consumed any alcohol at all!

Dumbfounded, the officer said, I'll have to ask you to accompany me to the sheriffs office. This breathalyser equipment must be broken."

"I doubt it," said the truly proud non-drinker. "Tonight I'm the designated decoy. Everyone who was drunk already left while you were waiting for me to pull out of the parking lot."

Who knows if thats even a real story..it was a myspace bulletin, so it could have traveled from anywhere..

but i agree, being the decoy would be fucking great. i love talking to cops sober and clean. i know they aint got shit on me so i just mouth off and be a smart ass. as long as you dont cross a certain line, and each cops has a different line limit, you will be fine, and have a good story for friends.

Unfortunately, thanks to 'think of the children', the legal definition of drunk has become insane. With my body weight, I can't even have a glass of wine with dinner and drive afterwards, because the law considers me drunk. When I moved out of the US, I was amazed at how relaxed the drunk driving laws could be. About the only way you can get a DUI where I now live is if you wreck and have been drinking. If this happens, they throw the proverbial book at you. Otherwise, you are free to be responsible for your own actions. Living in the Caribbean, where rum is cheaper than milk, we have a lot of people drinking alcohol... and with the fairly loose laws (no open container laws, etc), we have less problems than the people in the states with their draconian authoritative "save the children" BS.

yeah, people who are blindly against drunk driving just don't see the whole spectrum. i have to be pretty damn drunk to not still be able to drive. i know my limits and take full responsibility for them. if i can't stare at something without my eyes involuntarily moving, or if i can't stand straight up, or walk straight, i don't drive. i have seen people dive just fine yet be pretty fucking drunk. it is just like anything else, you have to learn to do it. most people who get in wrecks while drunk were just being stupid, immature fucks. it's all about self control, composure.

but oh yeah, i heard that joke years before myspace was around lol

You sound immature and naive in your attitude to drinking and driving.  No amount of "practice" can restore your response and reaction time when you're drunk.  Just because someone seems to drive well when they are drunk doesn't mean they will be able to respond well if an unexpected situation arises while they are behind the wheel.  And that is exactly what causes accidents, unexpected situations.  Getting behind the wheel when impaired is just stupid and selfish.

That being said, the laws regulating DUI have become draconian at best.  The legal limits placed on BAC are subjective and in some cases ridiculous.  And the law allows no leniency even when mitigating circumstances would draw a logical conclusion to do so.  It is for this reason alone that I quit doing it.  Not for fear of my safety, and (I'm ashamed to admit) not for the safety of others, did I quit driving after drinking.  But fear of the legal repercussions alone stopped me from getting behind the wheel after even one drink for the last 10 years.  Strange, but as much as I hate them, I am living proof that the laws work.
