Is there beauty to be found in dark art, what worth or merit does it offer us?
Is there a point when dark art becomes ill/disturbing?
Is dark art an expression of a sad/unhealthy world?

i think dark art is beautiful and interesting. Gerald Brom
-------------------- Man is timid and apologetic; he is no longer upright; he dares not say "I think," "I am," but quotes some saint or sage. He is ashamed before the blade of grass or the blowing rose.Man postpones or remembers; he does not live in the present, but with reverted eye laments the past, or, heedless of the riches that surround him, stands on tiptoe to foresee the future. He cannot be happy and strong until he too lives with nature in the present, above time TRANSCEND

...or so the kiddies think, unless they know what this is about.

it's no coincidence that pirates and zombies are all the rage these days.

Goya's depiction of Kronos devouring one of his children.
Of course there is merit in expressing darkness in art, it is a fundamental fact of existence, and it is an inherent element within the human subconscious. Facing it is essential.

interesting questions, oliveplume. i have to think about this... at one point in time i definitely would have said there is a point where dark art becomes ill and disturbing. i think there is a limit to all things - we can explore the darkness in ourselves but when we try and look too deeply we might just get absorbed in it.

Dark Art is simply an expression of the human psyche from whence it came; nothing more, nothing less. Therefore, whether it's ill/disturbing is subjective.
I can find beauty (or at the very least I can understand the viewpont) in/of almost anything.

As long as you recognize that dark and light...psychologically and spiritually...are just two sides of the same coin. Both should be given their due, but don't dwell overlong in either place. When considered this way they are but textures to give our life color and feel. I like them best when blended seamlessly.
-------------------- "A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda
