Calibrating a scale?

My scale's telling me to hold Cal/mode and on/tare to display a random number, then tap on/tare and it will say 500.0g. Then I'm supposed to put a 500g weight on it and it's good. It never displayed 500g, but just to see how accurate it is I put an 8th of shit I just bought on it and it's coming up 3.5/3.6 which is exactly what my friend weighed it out to be. You think it's good to go? What else can I weigh to be sure?

Nevermind, that was with the cellophane on, I took it off and it says 2.5 so I'm like 1.1 off. How do I change it?
EDIT: OK I got it to show 500, now what weighs 500 grams ?

Try a gun/ammo shop- they often have very precise weights. Some marine supply stores might have fishing weights, tho all I've found have been in oz measurements.

coins have precize weights too
you can find the weight of coins from where you live on the internet. Maybe 1 coin is too little to calibrate your scale with, then stack up a bunch of them

A 500g weight. You really want to be fairly precise with what you use as the scale will skew everything it weighs based upon the assumption that the 500g weight you used to calibrate was exact.

you should be able to find calibration weights at hobby shops and possibly any large chain stores (target, walmart, etc).

An US nickel is supposed to weigh 5g, but they are fairly variable (+/- .1g)... multiply the error out by 100 and you will be off a few grams (usually light).
> you should be able to find calibration weights at hobby shops
Yep. I have seen them on ebay as well. You don't need a super accurate one, as they are very expensive. An ASTM class 4 calibration weight would be fine (unless you are playing with RCs), as it will be within 10mg at 500g.
They are often called a calibration mass rather than a calibration weight.
A M2 500g calibration weight, new is going for about $65 online and around $18 on ebay. An M2 weight should have a tolerance of 2.5mg at 500g.

Buy a Canadian Silver Maple bullion coin. Only costs 15 bucks and it weighs 31.1 grams exact.
For the calibration weight, use a calibration weight. Really. If you cant get them at the addresses mentioned you can go to a place that sells scales online, they will often have that weight for you.
It was advised to me that if you have scales that weigh 500 grams at 0.1gr sensitivity, that you never weigh anything over 100 grams.
My local coffeeshop is tha bomb! If you buy weed or hash there, most of the time if you buy one gram you get 1.25-1.5 grams, unless ofcourse you are trouble, impolite etc. Its their policy of attracting the right customers.
