...uh, it might be helpful to know what you're "baking".

Yea...... you need to have your casing mix hydrated and ready to go, then you pasteurize it. Sorry

Any heat should be wet heat. Surrounding your casing mix with hot air won't help it. Start over indeed.

There you go again! Why do you mess with the final product?

You're going to want a P.H buffer for the peat moss, verm alone will not lower the acidity of it, I'm fairly certain it lays around the 8.1.9.1 level which is overly high for mycelium, adding some powdered eggshells, oyster shells or lime will help buffer it to the desired 6.1.7.2 P.H levels that is best.
A casing layer overly high in acidity will cause many aborts and the mycelium does not take very well to it.
Oh, and no, you need water when pasteurizing. This is what helps bring your casing layer up to Field capacity

lol, .... it should be fine when all is said and done. I pasturize in the oven aswell in a LARGE pan I got from work. double foil it and put it in for about 1-3 hours at 170.
dont forget to put water in it again

I try not to smoke when I'm fuckin with my shroom shit because I always mess up haha, the other day I had a full syringe and I was trying to pull it back a little to get air into it so I could shake it, but I ended up pulling the whole thing out and all the spores fell onto my counter.

I'm confused. Peat moss is acidic, and a ph of 8 is basic.

No, a pH of 7 is neutral. Peat is acidic, but mushroom mycelium actually prefers acidic conditions. That's not the reason we lime casings. We lime to help prevent contaminants that also like acidic conditions, but are less tolerant of sweeter substrates than mushroom mycelium. RR

ok so a added some lime pickling bullshit to some water and misted the casing before applying, noone answered me about how much to add so i put about a tablespoon, some water, turned into a nice white liquid, just mixed it in or whatever, hope it doestn effect in a bad way. so with my first casings i tried to slice the myc evenly and place into 12qt dishpans(wolly world baby $1.14) i put about 2- 2.5qt into each pan and layered with a very very thin casing. probally just enought to cover the myc and make it as even as possible, one thing i noticed after i saran wrapped is the mositure level could have been a little greater, will this effect colognization the next couple days, or should it be ok with a misting of two after i check on it in a couple days??
