Is it nessary to have a incubator
    #7556259 - 10/24/07 06:08 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Is it strongly recommended to keep jars in a incubator or can i get away with out it? I also plan once the cakes are colonized to give them about 12 hours of light a day is that sound about right?

No its not needed... Some times its more of a hassle w/ the water not staying clean.

It does help colonizing go faster, but it will still go at room temp. My room has been from 65-75 and has been working fine for me!

An incubator isn't critical, but temperatures are. Try and keep them in a completely dark area around 81-84F. And any time you can give the mushies light is fine. Try searching next time, all this information has  been discussed heavily in the forums.

color safe bleach cures the nasty water problem in your tIt incubator.

also, it's really only recommended if you live in a cold environment, or a house that's always cold.

I wouldn't suggest incubating or colonizing a jar at any less then 78-80*F, 78*F being the absolute lowest.

I have to use an incubator during winter, not so much during summer.

it really just depends on how cold your house is and how fast you want it to colonize, on a shelf, it can take a month, in an incubator it can take a week.

Has anyone ever done an experiment with half jars in an incubator and half without? I have never seen hard data on how much time I would save from incubating at 76 vs 84~

Cheers

Not sure, but that would be a good one to do. I think there are many things that go into it tho, not just temperature. I'm talking about moisture of cakes, substrate ratios, strain of cubes, etc. But that would still be a good experiment.

If you can come up with one, preferable a dub-tub type. then use it, but if you can't there should be no noticeable difference.

But what do I know I'm just the doctor!:)

I'm doing my incubation in 3 different places right now, one over my tower, one over my fridge and in my incubation box which is working with a ceramic heater. I inoculated my jars on monday, will it be too early to check them tomorrow to see if there's anything growing? Now the temperature is set to 79 in my incubation box, the heater shows 86 right after it stops so I won't go over that until I get a descent thermo/hygro.

Well I think i have a good solution, i have a bathroom with a heater in it and i can control the temp in that room i figure if i set the temp to 80 or so shut the door and put the jars under the sink i can skip making a whole incubator. Does this sound like a good idea ??

incubating is not nessesary and can lead to other problems. Unless u have a particularly cold house then u can leave them at room temperature.

No higher than 81F, the growth of at and above 83 can harm and slow the growth of mycelium, and can stimulate growth of contams.
