Pan SUbbs?
    #7556000 - 10/24/07 05:12 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Ok...I just want to ask a couple subb questions because they are a relatively confusing active for me. I think I have found some however they do not really have a very defined ring around the margin of the cap. The stipe is hollow and has some red hairs, it is also cream colored...the spore print is JET BLACK....habitat is grass. Also I would like to know if there are any deadly look a likes to pan subbs?

there are no deadly look-a-likes to P subbs. You may find some poisonous mushrooms growing in the same habitat, but there are non that are poisonous that look like P Subbs.

If the spore print is jet black and there are fibrils on the stipe (little hair like structures on the stem) then it is most likely Panaeolus subbalteatus. The jet black spore print is the single best indicator though.

The look-a-like to P subbs, is panaoelina foenesecci. It is not known to be toxic, and i have ingested a few to no ill effect. But there is not a whole lot of history concerning the mushroom's ingestion and should be avoided for that reason.

Not all examples of P subbs have hygraphorus (sp?) rings on cap, though many do, and it is a good way to ID them.

Hope that helped. Happy hunting.

yeah thanks a lot...I am going to try them out on FRYday. Ha. I assume that one dried eighth of subbs will do the trick?
