I read that when you are sterilizing your jars you should leave the lids loose? I know to leave the rubber liner facing up, tape the innoc. holes and cover with tin foil. But should I screw on the lids all the way or leave them loose during sterilization? Also, when the jars are inoculated I should leave the holes open during incubation?

I am by no means and expert... but I screwed the lids on tight. The air should escape through the holes, even if their taped, or through the upside down lid. I left my holes open during incubation. Some of my jars I did not even use tape. The dry layer of verm should keep the contams out. Out of 12 jars inoculated two weeks ago, I have no contams at this time and jars up to 80% colonization.

They should be loose since when heated glass expands and the jars "could" crack. With pf method i wouldn't really bother since you really aren't getting them all that hot so expansion is pretty minimal but if using a PC definitely leave them loose.

Yeah, I learned this the hard way with one of my last jars. I forgot to loosen it a little and it cracked. I would say loose either way, just in case. It's not going to hurt.

Holes can be left open so long as you continue to leave the foil on.

I do it with the rubber down and lose lids, just tighten them before inoculation.

I use rubber side up so the lids don't get stuck to the glass. I've never left the rings loose, always tightening them fully. With pf jars it doesn't matter because the verm on top is the filter, but with grains and filters, you should tighten the lids so contaminants don't have a chance to get under the filter after sterilization.
