Spawning Question

FOAF is going to be spawning WBS to 80 Coir / 20 Coffee. She wants to know how you go about actually spawning in trays. Do you do a layer of substrate, then layer of colonized spawn, then layer of substrate?
Your tips on substrate please.

I do what ever is easiest for me. In most cases that involves mixing my WBS into a tray of coir, but if for some reason it is easier for you to layer it, by all means do so. The methods are basically interchangeable. As far as substrate, unamended coir has become my sub of choice, because it works great and is very easy to prep.

FOAF was going to use pasteurized Coir / Coffee with some gypsum to balance the pH.
FOAF was told to do it in layers, but I always thought you were just supposed to mix.

Both ways are acceptable.
Gypsum is not used to balance pH, but it makes a good addition to the substrate at around 5-10%. It helps with nutrients, from what I've read.
You don't need to balance the pH of you substrate, but you may want to use hydrated lime to do that when making your casing mix.

Simple machine is right on both accounts, gypsum works as a buffering agent - which is something that can resist a change in pH - but more importantly it provides a consumable source of calcium. Also, as mentioned, you do not need to alter the pH of the substrate, mycelium prefers a substrate in the 6.5-6.8 range to readily assimilate the food-source. (which is why we do pH balance our casing layer so as to make it less hospitable with any newly germinated contaminates)
And coco-coir, after it's been amended with gypsum and used coffee grounds (which is also a pH buffer), will have a almost dead perfect pH for colonization...

Other than that, you can check out my sig below for a pictorial of creating coco-coir as a substrate...
