The Feynman Lectures on Physics
    #7554200 - 10/24/07 09:15 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I started reading the Feynman Lectures on Physics, for fun, a few months ago (now halfway the second volume). It has been a great, amazing, interesting and fun read so far.

Quote:

The Feynman Lectures on Physics, by Richard Feynman, Robert Leighton, and Matthew Sands is perhaps Feynman's most accessible technical work, and is considered a classic introduction to modern physics, including lectures on mathematics, electromagnetism, Newtonian physics, quantum physics, and even the relation of physics to other sciences.

The first volume focuses on mechanics, radiation, and heat. The second volume is mainly on electromagnetism and matter. The third volume, on quantum mechanics, shows, for example, how the double-slit experiment contains the essential features of quantum mechanics.

Have any of you read it? What's you opinion about it?

I really recommend his lecture books to anyone interested in general physics. I think you do need a college level algebra course (or a very good healthy brain) to be able to understand most of it.

I've had a lot of physics and mathematics and while the subjects aren't always new, the way it was explained was new in most cases. His classes were mostly filled with colleagues and graduate students, so it is interesting for more advanced physicist.

I hope to discuss some ideas that came to me mind reading it, I just recommend this book for now.

Of course.   Great read, good physics, Feynman rocked!

Yea, they are great. Feynman, as well as bieng the greatest american born scientist of all time, was also a great teacher. That is something that many researchers are definitely not. You can almost hear his brooklyn accent come through from the page.

I have his actual audio lectures on MP3 (the once he gave the students in the early 60s). They are very good as well. Im assuming you have already read "Surly your joking Mr. Feynman?" and the like. If not, pick it up.

Definitely a good read. We used it briefly in some class, I mean the prof printed out some sections of it which is all I have read. Does he go into general relativity and quantum?

Sounds like a good read.  I'll have to give it a go during break or over the summer, as I have plenty of textbooks that I need to be reading at the moment. :goodmorning:

I am a big fan of "Six Easy Pieces"... His way of explaining things is second to none.
