More police brutaility and corruption

Omaha (KPTM) - A family says a call for help turned violent after police arrived on the scene.

It happened in South Omaha around two o'clock Sunday morning. The family says Omaha police officers used pepper spray and beat them. "We asked for help and they were pepper spraying my entire family," says Diana Pekas.

Pekas dialed 911 because her teenage son was threatening to hurt himself. She says when police arrived, they recognized her son. Pekas says they then handcuffed and beat him. "I just kept pleading with him to stop and he wouldn't," Pekas adds. Pekas daughter, Danielle Galvan, also witnessed what she called an attack on her younger brother. "(The officer) picked him up and just started slamming his head into the walls," says Galvan. The family said the beating left holes in the walls, and left the teen with a black eye and cuts on his leg.

Diana Pekas says after she touched an officer on the arm more of her family was attacked, as well as a minister who lives across the street. "I said this is a nightmare. I couldn't believe it," say neighbor Anthony Yates. Though the family considered themselves victims, police called them suspects.

Officers cited six people for disorderly conduct and obstructing officers. OPD released a statement about the incident. It read in part, "As officers attempted to gain control of the juvenile male, four family members began to confront the officers and then became physically combative. A 'help an officer' was broadcasted, multiple officers responded." Finally it read, "If any of the people taken into custody feels the officer's actions were not appropriate they can file a formal complaint."

That's exactly what the suspects said they'd do. "If officers were wrong they need to be reprimanded and corrected. People have rights too," Said Yates. When asked if she'd ever call police for help again, Diana Pekas replied, "No. there's no way I can."

(this article has nothing to do with politics, sez phred)

THE number of NYPD cops using drugs, stealing property - even from the dead - and committing other acts of corruption, including extorting sex from female suspects, spiked sharply last year, according to a confidential NYPD report.

The astonishing wrongdoing in cluded everything from cops solicit ing sex in exchange for overlooking crimes to stealing credit cards from the homes of dead people to hiring a hit man to commit murder.

The tawdry tales include stories of cops not only betraying their badges, but also their brother and sister officers in blue.

In one case, two cops allegedly disclosed the identity of an undercover officer who came into a restaurant while they were bartering for sex with a woman they had once arrested.

In another case, two Manhattan cops were caught looting money from a precinct house's kitty that included cash collected from T-shirt sales for the cancer-stricken daughter of yet another cop.

"It was ugly," a source said.

In yet another incident, a cop teamed up with a "police impersonation" robbery ring after she could not find another corrupt cop to work with the gang.

And then there was an officer who hung out with drug dealers who also made "friendly" bets on sports events - with the payoff in marijuana.

The revelations contained in the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau 2006 Annual Report - obtained by The Post - include:

* Arrests of New York's Finest rose 25 percent in 2006 over the previous year, from 91 to 114.

* The number of cops caught using drugs last year jumped 138 percent, from eight incidents the previous year to 19, including one cop using PCP (phencyclidine), and another shooting steroids into his butt.

* Fraud allegations involving insurance, credit card and welfare swindles rose 85 percent to 50 complaints from 27 the previous year.

* The number of cops stripped of their guns and badges and placed on modified duty jumped 55 percent, from 137 to 212, but suspensions fell 11 percent from 159 to 142.

The Post pieced together the accounts using sources, court records and district attorneys' offices, along with the tightly guarded annual IAB study.

And another, in the same week! These reports are not isolated, and are becoming more severe.

About 30 people pedaled or walked their way through the streets of Tucson last night, ending up on the lawn of the Tucson Police Department as part of a national campaign to expose police brutality.

Members of the groups Tucsonans Against Police Squads and Copwatch International began their march at the University of Arizona Police Department station, 1852 E. First St., and then continued on bike to the Joel D. Valdez Library, 101 N. Stone Ave., where people took turns speaking about violent encounters they have had with police.

Lazarus Dubois, a UA political science alumnus, said he has heard of and seen students being attacked by UAPD.

"I watched a UAPD officer pushing a woman away, push her by the breast," he said.

"I have also personally been attacked by police in protest and falsely accused," he said. "That ruined my life for a really long time and that is all because of police that were stretching the truth and making up stories."

Other demonstrators said they also witnessed police use force on peaceful protesters.

"I have seen a lot of police brutality," said Che Hise-Gattone, a City High School sophomore. "Random firings at protesters and protesters getting hauled away in handcuffs. I don't agree with cops that use violent actions."

"If it is a peaceful protest, then the use of heavy action should not be allowed," said Guinn Montes, a City High School sophomore. "It is really useless because it gets people angry and increases the violence level."

Demonstrators said a history of police using inappropriate force on protesters and everyone else is an abuse of power.

"The police represent control instead of protection," said Paul Gattone, a Tucson lawyer. "The police look upon us as a source of trouble and don't create a bond with us but try to control us."

Dubois said the police department has become a tool of oppression governments use to control citizens.

"Brutality and oppression and criminalization are becoming more common," he said. "We should have an alternative."

Sgt. Eugene Mejia, UAPD public information officer, said any group is allowed to gather on UAPD property "as long as they abide by all laws."

"They have a right to do whatever they want to bring focus to their group," he said.

Mejia said no one from the groups have ever attempted to contact the UAPD regarding police brutality, so he does not "know what they are protesting exactly against."

The Tucson Police Department said it was not aware of any demonstrations planned for the evening.

Oct. 22 marks the 12th annual National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation. Demonstrators will gather all around the country to protest police violence, Gattone said.

AND, now there's no Police Auditor in Omaha anymore...they "eliminated the position".

I used to kind of respect our Chief of Police, but he sure hasn't been running the place very well. I understand he's probably under a lot of pressure, due to the increased levels of violent crime, especially in the last year, but that's no reason to start ignoring the rights of citizens and charging people who asked for your help with a crime.

It's a nasty, growing trend. And come on, even the thick piggies should be able to grasp the concept of "protect and serve". I suspect that's no longer the priority. Now they seem to be little more than domestic stormtroopers.

one can probably trace such incidents all the way back to initiatory police training.

i am certain that today's law enforcement training is totally different than it was let's say 50 years ago.

for example instead of "protect and serve" it's now "everyone's suspect."

I think it has to do with the personalities of people who want to become policemen, a lot of the cops I've had encounters with aren't the most confident people, usually they're more nervous than I am. (And I'm the one with crack in my ass)

considering an investigation into wrong doing can take months and you'll be
suspended with pay, it shows crime as a cop pays, better than being a cop does anyway

cops should suffer double the penalty that civilians receive with no leniency,
they know the laws because they're paid to uphold the laws, they probably sent people to jail for the same shit

and they should be in population

no shit, there is no accountability, and they are nothing but domestic stormtroopers who harass and intimidate people, and commit more crimes than anyone.

police are nothing but a violent gang.

police stealing from citizens is so commonplace, but what do you get if you report it? nothing. more harassment.

they get away with it, that is why they do it.

I may be playing devil's advocate here, but I've been helped by the police more often than I've been harassed by them.

I don't doubt that, though personally I have been harassed by cops in my lifetime FAR more than I have been helped.  Cops in my city actually don't help that much at all, they usually tell you they will try to make it out there in the next X amt. of hours, when the assistance is needed immediately.

Case in point, my girlfriend called them few months ago about an armed home robbery in progress she saw happening down the street, and the disbatch said they would try to get a unit out there within the next 3 hours.  WTF?  This has been typical of the response I and the people I know, of all walks of life, have received any time they have ever called the cops around here "oh, we're busy now, but we'll try to get a unit out there within the next few hours"  I realize they can't be everywhere at once, but in this instance I later found out that they were "tied up" harassing a teenager about a negligable amount of cannabis, and that is the reason they didn't respond to the armed robbery in progress call.  They need to seriously get their priorities straight.

Around here they are always quick to try to arrest and harass everyone, but whenever anyone I have known has actually needed any assistance from them, they are always "busy" and nowhere to be found.  Again, I know some areas are better than others, but the cops around here are literally worthless.  Due to that most people around here have resorted to carrying concealed handguns now since they know if anything does happen the cops won't show up until several hours later, or even the next day sometimes.
