Can cops scanners hear cell phone calls?

Cab police scanners pick up cellphone transmissions? What is the chance? We've got crackheads next door, and cops are always hangin' around.
Just feelin' a tad paranoid, is all.

However, cordless phones (not cell phones) are a different matter.

The technologies that carry cell phone calls usually mean the stuff over the airwaves is digital, for one thing. Also, on just 1 frequency many calls can be carried, each having its own slice of time.
The only way to grab airwaves and break it down into a digital stream, capturing only the one conversation you're interested in, would be using a highly modded handset or some expensive equipment, ie software radio.
It would be a lot more cost-effective for the po-lice to just get a court-ordered wiretap. Anyways, any evidence they obtain without a warrant would be inadmissable in court.
I'm very certain what you've said is incorrect. Please see my thread.
Also, your piece about several calls being carried on 1 frequency is severely incorrect. Cell phones are full-duplex: Outgoing and Incoming is carried on two seperate frequencies.

I don't disagree, I mentioned that in my thread as part of the Crowded Room metaphor. So, yes, if you were talking a high traffic time it would be harder for them to monitor you, but how would you be able to know the ammount of traffic at the time of your call?
Also, I would be surprised to know that if a cellular phone company has the ability to take up to 4 (I guess 8 in theory) signals othagonically on one frequency (random question, how many frequencies are in a typicall cell?) wouldn't monitoring technology be able to do the same thing? Granted, it would be difficult in times of high traffic to monitor a call in real time, but would they be able to analyze this data retroactively?
TDMA has a scheduler which means that there are regular intervals in which the signal hits that frequency. I'd imagine there are scanners capable of synching themselves with this rhythm, or they could probably just ask the carrier for tempo of intervals.
BTW. My knowledge on this is minimal, I just know what I was told by someone who is responsible for this type of surveillance.

I played around with a scanner (analyzer actually) that was able to intercept/decode cell phone conversations (back in the late 90's) with some demo gear from HP's microwave division... price tag for the gear was in the $120,000 range. I don't keep up with cell phone technology, and have no idea if/how things have changed. Ten years ago, it could be done, but with very expensive equipment.

It would just be weird if cops sitting infront of my house monitoring a crackhead appartment, could listen to me bullshitting.
Doesn't sound like thats the case.

There are devices to listen to cellphone calls but i dont think the cops would have one in there vehicle. I experienced one at a firestation were one of my friends worked. I know it works with digital because my cell doesn't have anolog capibilities.

I would not be worried about a scanner picking it up. But a 10$ bluethooth dongle can connect to your phone download all mesgs phone numbers and history and act as a bluetooth headset so you can hear everything. look up bluesnarfing if you are bored.

Even police scanners do can not go into the 950 mhz or higher frequencies that are needed to listen in on cell phone calls. However like previously stated cordless phones are another story I pick up neighbors cordless phone calls on accident quiet often.

That would be quite illegal for them to have. It's illegal for anyone to listen to private phone conversations without a wiretap warrant.
Either you're wrong and spreading bullshit rumors or you should have them busted so we can read about it in the paper. I'm assuming that you're just full of shit though.

After the patriot act and no telling what other legislation has been passed under our noses they can probably do that without a warrant..Their doing it to protect us from terrorism. There was an article in the news not long ago admitting to real time spy satellites to watch US citizens. They also admit to being able to capture IM's and chat logs in real time along with listening in on phone conversations. Now this might not be true for local law enforcement but for FBI CIA and NSA they can.

Being able to get wiretaps more easily isn't the same as being able to just listen randomly to people's calls with a scanner.
There's also no security benefit to it. The chances of randomly happening upon an important conversation is almost zero.
So let's keep things grounded in reality here. This is "security & safety," not "paranoia & bullshit."

good golly, the patriot act has nothing to do with your cell phone and the legal requirments to tap it.
stop the fear mongering w/ the patriot act allready, or read the thing
People make to big a deal out of it. Yes it sucks. Yes I'm against the concept, and yes the president allready had most of those powers anyways when used against people attempting to spy, harm the US for a foreign entity.
This shit doesn't apply to you selling crack or whatever.
