Are these ready to shake?
    #7552564 - 10/23/07 08:04 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Shake around 20% colonization, right?
WBS.
1 week since spore inoc (does this look good for 1 wk?)

All the bottoms are like this:

When shaking, do you really have to knock these hard to break the mycelium?

2 things

1) why did the bottom colonize first so much? 2cc (roughly) per jar, and they were shaken after inoc

2) some large chunks could not be broken up. 1-2" chunks. they were mixed as best as possible amidst the free grain however. that ok?

gravity.

and not really.
use an inflated tire, like a car's spare tire to hit the jars
against.
you want all of the grains to break up during mixing.
mixing/shaking isn't so effective if there are still large clumps of
grain left over when you're done.

That could have been because of an overly wet WBS. When I shake my jars, shake them upside down, and then slowly turn them back around so that there is a lot of space between the seeds. It's so easy to accidentally compact the WBS.

Ok, reshaked and now there's basically no trace of mycel, and no clumps. Had to really shake hard.

That should be the last shake you will have to do. And yea, I've bruised my hands from having to shake the living shit out of jars before. LOL! GL

You know if the myc was doing fine like in your case I use to just leave em alone which was most of the time. Put spores in and shake at that time and leave em alone if they were growing fine and fast. I just figured why break up the myc so it has to heal again to save what may be a day.

This was day 3 for me

and this was day 9 with no shake.

(Remember folks this is just my opinion)

Yeah I was wondering what was the theory behind the shaking - some might say delve into teks, but all I can really see is that the myc will expend extra energy repairing and re-establishing instead of colonising...

Aaaaaanywho, Good looking ajrs you got there, more than I've got at the moment for sure.

Cheers - boingkster.

yeah either way there was a disproportionate amount of mycel on the bottom, it didnt colonize as nice and evenly as the above did..

exactly.
that's why we shake.

if the jar is colonizing evenly, there's no need for shaking.
but if you only have a few clumps, you're going to save yourself
far more than one day by shaking.
you can save yourself a week or more in time.
