Amanitas
    #7547454 - 10/22/07 03:56 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

A friend of mine was wondering if anyone was familiar with which variations these would be.

We will need to see a good picture of the base of the stem and know your approximate location to give you a correct answer.

If you are in the usa, there is a good chance that it is Amanita muscaria subsp. flavivolvata, the common one.

Probably Amanita muscaria, but you need to take a look at the base of the stem to be sure.

Look for the concentric rings on the base of the stem along with the nice big bright red cap.

You can see them pretty well on this one:

I'd assume so. They look like amanitas muscaria to me, but I can't be sure. I wouldn't do it without a proper ID if i were you.

The yellow/orange ones almost look like amanita citrina to me. The red one looks exactly like amanita muscaria.

the yellow orange ones your seeing are acutally peeled. they were all bright red. they were also bigger than most of the mushrooms i've seen. they have left a piss-yellow color on the towels the skin was placed on.

if these were not amanitas muscaria and not from the amanita family, what could they be?

I was trudgin' for cyanescens and I saw a large mushroom that I could've mistaken for Amanita muscaria.

There was about three of them - one was small and the cap was a faded white-yellow and the other one, which was more mature, was an orangish-red. They also had some of the white, um, 'moles', if you will.

Is this actually amanita? Or is it that poisonous look-alike? I'm thinking about picking it.

(Sorry, I know a picture would help. If need be, I can snap one.)

well theres no doubt they are amanitas, and im almost certain that they are amanita muscaria, but without seeing the stem, i could be too afraid to eat/smoke them. Its up to you really.

If you can remember what the stems looked like then you can be pretty sure which ones the are.

well, they are definitely red, no debate needed on that one.

so, what other amanitas are red? i was looking on mushroomExpert and the only amanitas that were red were amanita muscaria.

im not really planning on eating these, i just want to smoke the skin to see what happens.

There are hundreds of types of Amanitas, Amanita phalloides is a deadly Amanita. You would not want to smoke the skin of a deadly Amanita.

That said, the Amanita you found is not one of the deadly ones. None of the deadly ones are bright red.

Still, you are best off finding another one so you can take a good look at the base of the stem and see the concentric rings, you'll get that warm fuzzy feeling from knowing that you properly identified the mushroom.
