Intentional Clues
    #7550649 - 10/23/07 12:22 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Why might somebody keep a cross around their neck?  Is it a good idea to carry a symbol with you, leaving a clue for yourself that leads you back to spirituality?  What effect would this have on you personally?

Let's say you tattooed a symbol on your forearm.  It could be anything, but the point is that your intent is for it to act as a spiritual conduit.  You tell yourself, this will always remind me, this will be my clue during the blur of each day, this is a child to gently tug my sleeve.  What effect would this have on me?  A wedding ring is a constant reminder of the path you chose, it sounds comforting to have your thoughts directed back to this point whenever you look at it.  At the same time it seems like a limiting factor, you ground yourself into that definition.

When faced with conflict, you may notice your bracelet or tattoo and remember the personal mantra behind that symbol, the resolution becomes easier.  If you follow through on that process, you seem to be denying impulse, clinging to past conclusions, and closing your mind to other possibilities.  It may be somewhat more positive than that, you return to this one point of thought where you can internalize the issue, and rationalize a conclusion that is true to who you are.

I'm reminded of the elements of story.  The writer leaves clues for the reader, these small influences seem unimportant but will eventually add up to a realization or decision for the protagonist.  Is carrying symbols with you a foreshadowing of sorts?

Do you carry any symbolic things with you each day?  Are you a good "writer" of your own story?

Absolutely not.

Nothing? No tattoos, rings, bracelets, necklaces, special undies? I don't mean fashion items, just things that are for yourself alone.

I don't have any myself. I just happened to insult someones' tattoo with my curiosity. These things can be such a serious matter for some people!

I have tats but they all say MOM. And I didn't really like my MOM.

I did all that shit in the past. But now I don't want to be reminded of anything I believe.

I don't either, but I don't see a problem with holding things of personal value. Things can remind you of what you have achieved or what you are trying to achieve and can be quite powerful. They may also comfort you.

I once carried a small plastic starfish around with me to keep myself calm and focused.

I used to carry a rabbit's foot around to remind me that people are willing to torture and mutilate a cute furry mammal in order to carry around a reminder that people are willing to torture and mutilate a cute furry mammal in order to carry around a reminder that people are willing to torture and mutilate a cute furry mammal in order to carry around a reminder that people are willing to torture and mutilate a cute furry mammal in order to carry around a reminder that...
