Brf cake rot, can I save good parts?

Sorry about the lack of pics, my camera died. I did up 12 pint jars of brf cakes with Hawaiian and r44, incubated at 85deg (in a freezer with a light bulb and thermostat). The first few weeks looked fantastic but only one cake made it to completion, the others stalled at 70-90% done. No sign of contams and the general wisdom here dictated to flip them and be patient. After 3 weeks stalled I opened one to investigate last night. The uncolonized mix was wet and the bottom bottom colonized section smelled off, not horrible but a rotting smell. Cutting into it - the cake seemed dark, wet, spongy and had black in it. I could cut back to the clean mycelium where all smelled fine and mushroomy salvaging half a cake. All the stalled jars were the same. Is there any hope for the salvaged 1/2 cakes?

eeeek, i dont think those are worth saving.
Start again from fresh and make sure your moisture content is right.
Incubate at room temperature, 75-80 is fine, 85 is too high.
To me, a rotting smell could be contamination. I have never encountered this kinda of problem, or have seen any other posts with this.
Black doesnt sound good.
Anyone else have any input on this?

Pretty sure most of the advice on this website states to Not Risk it, afterall its only like 4$ a jar you waste. Supposedly you cut into the mold, and can release the spores. Is getting sick worth your 4$?

You don't have to throw the jar away...Do you have a pressure cooker? If so, Sterilize as you would normally at 15psi for about 90 minutes, then throw the insides away. You are going to trash that grow right? Please don't think of salvaging that in any way shape or form.

Thanks guys I'm not worried about the jars. I know the rule of thumb is toss them if they ain't right but since it doesn't appear to be mold I didn't know if it was possible to save the uninfected mycelium. Looks to me like they got waterlogged on the bottoms - the infected areas grayed with minor black spots (IE: rotting?). Anyway, looks like I'm off to Ralph's. Too bad, I wanted to see how his r44's were going to turn out!

Next time use 80F or less. High temperatures favor bacteria and molds, while slowing down or stalling mushroom mycelium. RR

Yeah thanks RR. I was going that direction. There's a few posts that actually recommend 85F as optimal. Fortunately now that I've been back here researching a few times I'm beginning to know better how to weight the opinions. Fortunately my first attempt (this was my second) was a success so I can afford to be patient
