I saw the Dalai Lama today
    #7549461 - 10/22/07 10:44 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

He's been at Emory University all week. Today he gave a public speech.
I have to say it was a very, very humbling experience.

As soon as we arrived they were blasting some amazing chanting over these huge speakers, which sounded very nice. I think this really had an effect on everyone there. The vibe was so calm and peaceful.

There were a few Tibetans playing traditional Tibetan music, along with assistance of a few local musicians. A local jazz band played. And some monks from a monastery danced a special dance they usually do around New Years to ward off negativity, and then they chanted until the Dalai Lama arrived.

The Dalai Lama's presence was amazing. Such a centered person. He talked about learning to love everyone as part of the Human family. About achieving a truly peaceful Home. He was either smiling or laughing almost the entire time.

There was a time at the end where the president of Emory was able to ask questions that local people had submitted online prior to His Holiness' visit. One question was a little boy who asked something along the lines of... how he is a methodist Christian, and some people in the church believed that he was severing his ties to God by going to hear the Dali Lama speak and supporting him.. and he wanted to know if they were right.. or something. To which the Dalai Lama answered something along the lines of how they were basically different routes to the same place.. and all from the some place..

It's sort of funny that right outside the gates of the park, in which the speech was being held, there was a hardcore Christian fundamentalist yelling and hollering about how Buddhism and enlightenment were just acts of Satan.. and how we were all going to hell.

I bet the Dalai Lama would have loved him with all of his heart
:smileyfrog:

I'm so grateful I got to experience his presence.
The Dalai Lama in the dirty south.. who would've thought?

I'm going to see him on the 28th when he'll be in Bloomington.
His brother lives here and actually owns a couple restaurants...

I hear only good things about the Dalai Lama: that he's always positive and always laughing, never too serious.  It is great that you were able to see him speak in person, and that you felt his calm presence (or your own reflected in his!).

Meatcakeman, why do you dislike the Dalai Lama?  Is it just that you don't find his teachings very useful, or is there some specific thing about him that bothers you?

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”
