FEMA 0-2
    #7549396 - 10/22/07 10:26 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Isnt the idea to help immediately? They should at least have food and water to help the displaced families in San Diego. Instead, the San Diegans (myself included) are asked to buy food and water to help people out. We are the victims and we are supposed to be our own disaster relief? Most people are losing everything when their house burns down...

BS.

FEMA fails.

Have the fires been declared a national disaster? If not, then FEMA isn't part of the picture.

A government bureaucracy for diaster relief is highly ineffective, most especially in terms of distributing emergency supplies.

The federal government should work with Wal*Mart on this. Wal*Mart's logistic system, as well as its strategic placement in almost every community makes it ideally established for ensuring that people in situations like this get what they need to survive. Wal*Mart's response to Hurricane Katrina demonstrated quite well that the free market is more capable of facillitating these needs than the government. When you distribute large volumes of this merchandise every single day, and have the logistics to effectively respond to situations anywhere in the United States very quickly, you can help a lot more than a government agency that never does anything.

I always concluded that, if the government declared martial law, they would utilize Wal*Mart as the means to supply the populace with the goods. :smirk:

What a shame, such a beautiful area. (but it looked extremely dry during my last visit) IMO The state of California should've
been better prepared for this....

the government just needs to stop bailing people out...maybe they will learn
their lesson.

FEMA is inept as is...it's a totally useless bureaucracy.

allow people to clear their propery to create an appropriate fire barrier
and fend for themselves.

oh, and fuck malibu...

it's a generalization, for the most part, yes you can, but in some cases you cannot.

While I agree, Fires are simply a part of California. They happen every year in the late summer and it has been that way long before people were building houses there. It is part of the cycle of Cali's forests. As inevitable as earthquakes. You can do controlled burnings and brush clearings, but ultimately these fires will happen and it is only a matter of time before a blaze gets out of control. I hope they can put it out soon.

The worst fire in state history was in 2003 in San Diego of all places.

From NYTIMES:
Quote:

San Diego is particularly haunted by wildfires. The worst one in state history burned nearly 750,000 acres in 2003, destroyed 3,600 homes and other buildings, and killed 24 people across Southern California, with much of the damage and more than a dozen of the deaths in San Diego County.

Officials there said those memories prompted swift action this time as the latest fire burned in much of the same area and same direction as 2003.

The same article states that the current fire has forced about 500,000 from their homes and killed 2 people. But the fire is still spreading so who knows how bad it could get.

Not sure what the news is stating where you live but in San Diego we were prepared which is why only a few people have been hurt. Most of the damage is unpopulated area and buildings. In the 2003 fire there were a lot more dead and a lot more injured. But, the fires didnt start from brush on peoples homes. All these fires in san diego started in areas that are either desolate or are part of national parks and protected areas.

The real problem is that the Santa Ana winds have been blowing (in some cases) more than 90mph and in most cases around 40-60mph. The embers travel over great distances in short periods of time. Plus helicopters and planes cant travel in those winds. We didnt have enough fire fighters to cover 6 different fires and by the time the help came from Colorado, Nevada and Arizona, the helicopters were able to fly.

Whoever said that the government needs to stop bailing people out, you obviously misread what I wrote. I didnt ask for them to bail anyone out, I simply stated that they were over 12 hours late (and still not here almost 24 hours later) and we have not gotten any food or water from the government. They are asking people who were forced to leave their homes to buy their own supplies and such. FEMA may be ineffective and you may not like it, but it is there to do a job and its not doing it. If my tax dollars go to a program, it better fucking work.
