inoculation Concern (first time + pics to come)

Hello,
This is my first time growing mushrooms and I'm using the brf caking method. I used steam sterilization for 90 minutes and then inoculated. Here are my concerns- Please tell me if any of these may be potential problems:
1. I was in a bit of a rush and I inoculated while the jars were still slightly warm. Does this matter?
2. I flamed sterilyzed the needle for the first jar with a bic lighter, and then wiped it with alchohal on a cotton ball. I did not flame sterilyze again after the first jar, but I did wipe it down with the alchohal on a cotton ball in between jars. Was this sufficiant enough?
Replies would be much appreciated and I will post pictures in a few days to show their progress.
UPDATE: 10/24/07- Day 3 and absolutely no signs of colonization (as expected) but still keeping the jars around for another week or so to see what happens. I will start the proccess over again soon, so any tips or advice or anything for this method you have would be greatly appreciated. I am using plain boiling water for sterilization, brf/verm cake method, then I'm planning on using the dunking/rolling method and putting it in the fruiting chamber and just letting it grow afterwards. Please leave any tips or advice. Thanks!
UPDATE: 10/27/07
DAY 5!! Today I got home and after not looking at the jars for a couple of days and not expecting anything to be there, to my suprise, there are HEALTHY, NICE LOOKING white spots showing colinization and absolutely NO SIGNS of contamination in ANY of the jars. SUCCESS!!! =D So far, so good at least.

I only waited 5 hours, one of the jars didn't inoculate on one side but that's it. Also, you probably should have flamed it inbetween each one, however time will tell if it was efficient or not. It really depends on how your house is.

Oh. I had never read any information about how long to wait after sterilyzation and I only waited about 1 hour or an hour and a half.

This may pose a problem, as if the jars are still warm on the outside, they're going to be significantly warmer towards the inside. A recommended cooling time is roughly 6-8 hours (preferably overnight). Like Al said, only time will tell if your spores survived the heat, but don't be surprised if they didn't.
Good luck.

I know, I know. I just have a gut feeling I skrewed it up and don't have much money to order another syringe or time or materials to go through the process again. I had a lot of trouble finding Verm and I went to a local gardening store where they didnt sell it, but used it and just gave me a couple of cups. *sigh*

You should be fine, I only use to flame the needle once prior to a multijar innoc but i also took care to immiedatly place the needle in a alcohol soaked paper towel inbetween innoculating jars.

Tough break man, just heads up for that in future. Have you got any liquid in the syringe left at all? If so, try making a liquid culture so you can replenish your syringe for free. Check out the Mylecium Culture bit under 'Mushroom Info' in the header, and you should be on the right path.
Basically, just use a teaspoon of honey per cup of water and bring the resulting mix to a boil for an hour. Let the whole thing cool inside its jar. inoculate the jar by squirting the last of your syringe through a hole in the lid you made before sterilising, and covered with foil/medical tape/whatever. Leave the jar around somewhere warm and it'll start growing mylecium. When you want to inoculate more jars, sterilise the tip of the needle and poke through the medical tape or whatever and draw some culture up [after shaking/swirling jar].
Cheers and good luck - boingkster

I dont know how u missed that in the tek, they all tell u to wait until they have cooled down, at least 3 hours, or to be safe, leave overnight.
I hate to say it, but i doubt they will grow, but all you can do is wait and see what happens. One thing though will happen, though is you will still find out if your sterile procedures were good enough.
If you have some spores left, look at the LC teks and make an LC, u will be able to make enough LC from very little spores to make hundreds of jars.
Just really read everything, double read it to make sure you get it right.
If you mess up the LC then your definatly gonna have to get more spores.
spores101 have great deals on spores, i got 3 syringes for $40, not really alot of money. And u will have a bit of variety

Yeah- Spores101 is great! That's who I ordered from the last time. I got it fairly quickly and in good condition as promised. I think I will do that 3 for $40 this time too. They have really good deals and now I'm really wishing I would have done it to begin with.
Any reccomendations on what 3 I should get? I'd like to try at least 2 different kinds.
I doubt they will grow too, but it was my first time and I geuss skrew-ups can be expected but at least I know now (I just reallyyy wish I would have took up Spores101's offer on 3 for $40 so I wouldn't have to wait even longer).
I also can't believe I missed the part about letting the jars cool! I was wondering in my mind "well it doesn't say anywhere if you're sopposed to do it right after sterilization or let it cool," and then the night after I did it THEN I found out. Also, the little bit that was left in the syringe I did not worry about and without thinking, I disposed of it. So...it looks like regardless I'm going to have to order another syringe and wait a little longer. In the meantime, I will let the jars sit and see what happens just in case.
Thanks for all the replies so far guys!

Yup dont throw them out, but dont expect them to do anything, you may get lucky, just put them away and let them do there thing for a week and check back.
As with syringes, its a good idea to keep them, as an empty syringe could come in handy, if u make up and LC u will need an empty syringe.
Also it can be possible to start up an LC from an empty syringe, as its possible there still spores inside the syringe. But since its been throwen out, DO NOT salvage it out the trash, its well contaminated now.

Thats not a great method,
Especially if you use a pressure cooker, PC need the pressure to release slowly, release it too fast, and u can loose alot of moisture from your jars. Dot ask me to explain why, if u think about it, you will understand.
Also this sudden release of pressure can result in contamination.
And can also crack your jars.
You MIGHT get away with it with steam sterilising. But i would still let it cool naturally.
And what is an extra 5 hours wait going to matter anyway why rush into it, much patience is needed in this hobby.

I don't own a pressure cooker. I used plain steam sterilyzation by boiling water. I thought that this methos would probably be the easiest and it also helped me because I found a step by step video on how to use this method on youtube. I'm totally visual and I usually skrew up from just reading directions.

it's sterilization, and if you're using the mushroom growing made easy video, it's a bit outdated by teks on this forum.
I have watched it about 3 times anyway because I like having video. You're on the right path. This website is an amazing resource

Actually, I havn't heard of this video. The video I watched was actually a sequence of videos called "Lets Grow Mushrooms!" divided into, I believe 4 parts. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZHJQrsZFQdE
I think I watched it about a million times trying to make sure I was doing everything right.

Yeah thats a good method, i watched that one several times. Plus i read alot of teks.
So my methods are a bit of a mix, with some adjustments of my own.
Im still trying to get the pf tek mix right though, im still a little on the wet side, but they still work.
The verm i use doesnt quite work right with the amount of water in the teks, i have to use a little less.
