I was undone by cantelope seeds...

I just lost an entire run of spawned substrate, six tubs worth, to fermentation and bacterial contamination... now, if someone would have posted about this my first thought would have been overheating settling in but I incubate and fruit all below 75(F).
So upon closer inspection of one of the tubs (compost substrate) I happen upon what I think is the most likely suspect...cantelope seeds. Despite my rather stringent requests that melon seeds and whatnot are not added to my kitchen waste bucket there must have been someone who forgot. As I slowly dissected the a few of the tubs, everywhere I found a cantelope seed, the mycelium had seemed to almost "melt" and the putrid fermentation smell was horrific.
Granted, logically it sounds like an "affirming the consequent" argument but considering I had coir only substrates prepared in the same pasteurization run that aren't contaminated, it had to be something in the compost and well...
Off to be reintegrated into the garden compost piles now...

that's why if i make a compost bin i'll prbly just put a lock on it, and only discard what I want into it.
Some thins just don't go in compost.

In other words, when the compost was being made my wife added a full melon's worth of cantelope guts to the pile and - at some point - picked up a bacterial contamination which survived the composting and pasteurization to go on to contaminate and ruin my substrate + colonized grains.

Ouch...very, very ouch. I think the locked compost bin idea is a pretty good one - just use a long-shank lock from a local hardware/home depot and put some holes in the container lid for it. People will get that they aren't supposed to use it.
Especially if you put a big, gnarly sign on it saying so in bright colours. Hahaha...

it wasn't that...so much as it was me using compost that wasn't completely finished thinking that the pasteurization process would knock out any residual nasties that may have been lingering - the pile went anaerobic once.
<bad guy on scooby doo impression> And my plan would have worked too if it weren't for those blasted cantelope seeds...lol
Ultimately it's a lesson about only using aged, finished, healthy compost. But the cantelope seeds make a great scapegoat...
