Dung question, please help me thank you
    #7548164 - 10/22/07 08:23 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I'm a newbie and was successful with BRF cakes(Yay!). Now I want to try poo. I got some fresh cow dung from a farm. The farmer scooped it out of the cow pen for me. I've leeched it and am drying it. The problem is that it's full of wood chips. Most of the Teks say to clean out any debris. I got all of the wood pieces out out that were more than 1 inch long but there's so many I will lose most of the poo if I take it all out. Will this be OK? Can I just pasteurize it and use it or should I not even bother?

If the farmer scooped it out of the pen, then there is a good chance that those wood chips are cedar. This is bad because cedar is put there to stop fungal growth. Even if you leech and remove the chips, there is still a good chance that you wont be able to colonize the poo.

Now I'm saying with 100% certainty that the chips are cedar, but there is a good chance.

The poo you want to get is from the field. Preferably from a horse, and very light in weight and golden in color. If its got all those, its sure to be A1

^^

Don't listen to this advice, The Dude is correct. Cedar has antifungal properties, as well as antiseptic/biotic. It's also great to keep bugs away. Good medicine... but not for your shrooms. Acidic.

Thank you all for the advice. Since I'm a perfectionist, I'll probably forget about this cow dung batch. There's a horse farm that offers free manure I can go to. I don't like to waste good mycelium:)

When you go to the horse farm, resist the urge to take from the pile, if there is one. You want to collect it yourself from the field. This assures that it is in the proper condition for your purposes. Just look around a little bit and inspect the condition of the various ages of poo. You should be able to easily see the difference in poo that is ready (old and already leeched by the rain) and stuff that is still too green.

Your looking for fluffy golden nuggets, when you find them you'll just know

apparently you don't understand that cedar is in fact a natural antifungal...

when searching for your equine dung, please be sure to check for the presence of actinomycetes, it will look like this:

What? You either get your poo from a COMPOSTED pile, or from the field. The latter more likely. Jeet has posted a perfect example. You may not find the same. Just look for GRAY/WHITE/LIGHT. Light as in weight.

the cedar shavings have been wet, the antifungal properties leech into everything it touches, they make rubbermaid tubs now infused with cedar, to keep the contents from molding.

I WISH I could just take horse poo myself from a field. I have had the worst luck. First the cow poo with the cedar. Then I go to a horse farm and they give me a box of horse poo. "ok, thanks". I get it home and it's got cedar!! WTF?! I think I'm gonna have to go sneak into a field. Blah. What is everyones opinion on Buffalo poo? I have plenty of that with no wood in it. I haven't been able to find much info about it. I got some and mixed it with a bag of "Cow Manure/peat moss that I got from agway. there were no fungicides listed on the bag. It looks like that's what I'm gonna have to use because My jars are almost fully colonized. I'll use straw and vermiculite with it? Yes, I'm very new.....but one day I'm going to rule the world!!! Muuuhahhhahha!! Thanks.

Yeah, I would think that buffalo might even be better than horse.

*gasp* Did I just type that?!
