Well I've always been really interested in Kava and I am now more than ever after giving up weed and tripping. I need to know what to order and a good online vendor to order some kava from. I don't want to waste my money on shit...
Advice?

Well, do you want to use it to get strong effects, or to ease anxiety and increase well-being?
I've never really felt messed up on Kava, I guess, but I've definitely felt it. It's been a great ally for helping me get through stressful times.
I've bought Kava from an herb store and chewed it, which gave nice effects.
I've also bought the NOW brand tincture, which I also like.
If you are looking to get messed up, most people say you need fresh root bark and a LOT of it.
I just got some kava tincture in the mail today, actually. I ordered it from NutritionGeeks

Someone educate me on this stuff. I've always been interested. I just read the Wikipedia page and it looks like it contains possible liver toxicity if parts beyond the root are used.
How strong is it? Good way to get through, say, an 8 hour work day? Any chance it might serve as a sleep aide?

I've had pretty good success with it as a sleep aid.
Probably won't last 8 hours, though

Nope, definitely not. You could ingest again and get effects again. In fact, I've read with Kava there is reverse tolerance, so the more you use it the more it should affect you

I ordered some kava yesterday. i'm very eager to try it. ever since I heard about it, I was interested. search Vanuatu Kava on google. I purchased the Fiji Kava, but the Vanuatu Kava is more potent. i'm sure its a good amount. i'll keep you guys posting when I try it out
I dunno if this kava is instant, but I think all I need to do is add it with water. but I'm going to try something a little more... tasteful.

my kava has arrived and i'm feeling it. pretty much how everyone is explaining it. the body buzz is similar to an opiate, but my mind is very clear. Anxiety is greatly reduced. please make note the taste is as bad as everyone says. I put some maple syrup in it, though, and it tastes much better.
pretty "instant" for me. all you need to do is add water.
1/2 lb gives you a good amount. I'm glad I decided to finally try this.

well I mixed to tablespoons with milk and some cocoa in a blender. I was REALLY feeling it about 40 minutes after consumption. Only problem is is that i really cant stomach the taste (the cocoa didn't mask it at all). And another problem is that about an hour after I was feeling it I started to get pretty sick feeling and went into the bathroom and vomited up everything in my stomach. Felt fine after that but I wish I knew what it made me nauseated, never heard of that being a side effect.

I recently got a bag of kava, not instant kava though. It was in chip form so i ground it up in a coffee grinder. I put six teaspoons of it in a glass with hot, but not boiled water, it had chunks in it so i put it through a coffee plunger. The water went a dark green colour. I quite like the taste, and it gave me a nice buzz. Not as strong as weed, more of a nice soft buzz. Im sure if you chugged alot of the stuff you could get preety high though.. If you use hot water, you could put some sugar in it.

I just used the coffee plunger to filter out the chunks of root in the water, i didnt put any coffee in it. I found hot water got the resin out better, i ground the chips of root into a fine consistency for the same reason.

try maple syrup. it still tastes bad but its really improved from straight up kava+water. I didn't feel sick after it. I'm going to prepare some kava right now.

Why is it that kava that you can buy online or from the store isn't nearly as potent as what you get in the South Pacific?
I've seen people in Fiji literally be crawling on their stomach along the beach because they cannot stand up.
Does it just have to be fresh?

I have a little under 1/2 pound in the cupboard at the moment...
You don't really need much preparation and I couldn't imagine drinking it hot. I prefer to use juice as opposed to water or milk and strain the root matter before consuming. Blueberry pomegranate is much recommended.
Check out my supplier:
http://www.konakavafarm.com/
They host some recipes on their site:
Cocoa Kava: Blend 2tbs Kava with 16oz water, strain. Add 1/2 cup high cocoa content chocolate and blend again. Cinnamon Honey Kava: Blend 2tbs Kava with 16oz water, strain, add 1tbs Honey, 1tsp cinnamon, 4 ice cubes and blend again. Lemon-Lime Kava: Blend 6tbs Kava with 3 Cups water, strain, add 1/4 cup lime or lemon juice and 2tbs Honey. Cocoawa: Blend 2tbs Kava with 16oz Coconut milk strain and enjoy.
Modern Drink: Blend 2 Tbs of Kava and 16 oz water for about 4 minutes. Strain & drink.
Fast & Tasty: Blend 2tbs of Kava with 16oz of any fruit or vegetable juice, strain and enjoy.
Also, their take on 'traditional':
Quote:
Strain the dried kava powder in water. In Hawaii the strainer is often a nylon stocking, cheesecloth or one gallon paint strainer (our absolute favorite thing to strain kava with). Use 1 to 2 ounces of powder per person. Place the powder into the strainer bag, hold its edges together at the top with your hand so that none of the powder escapes. Then, immerse the bag into a bowl of cool water. The amount of water will vary according to taste but a good rule of thumb is 2 ounces of powder to a quart of water. Use your hand to knead the kava under the water or bring the strainer out and squeeze then immerse it again in the water.
The kneading is the most critical step in the entire process!
The kava should feel oily at first which is due to kavalactone levels. Keep repeating this process until the kava in your strainer no longer feels oily. The water should take on the appearance of mud. That's it; you are finished!

today I did my usual glass of kava. I used orange juice instead of water, added cinnamon, maple syrup, and honey. It was more tasteful, but still tasted horrible. My next time I'm going to try milk+ice cream. I don't know how I can drink two glasses, I think I'll throw up. today I drank a tall glass but felt little to no effect whatsoever.
Was it what I put in the blender or that I need to drink more. Does reverse tolerance mean you more you've tried in a period of time the less you'll have to take?
I'll try two full glasses sometime, but the taste is getting to me

Reverse tolerance means that over time you become more sensitive to the alkaloids. Salvia is this way too.

Scaly skin doesn't sound fun though. How regularly do people here use it without experiencing any negative side effects?
nah man.. untrue.. the liver problems were thought to be a problem until they figured out it was manufacturers that were using parts other than the root to make the kava powder. and the yellowing of the skin is only when used a lot for a long time. its really a very safe substance.

I drank four cups last night. I mixed it with a big, nasty B-Vitamin because I heard long use depletes B12 vitamins or something. this was definitely the strongest high i've gotten from it yet. but it still didn't last as long as I wanted it to. seriously, an hour to an hour and a half was all it was. a little glow afterwards, but I was a little disappointed. but still, it was stronger. You think B vitamins affects kava at all?

if i bought some kava kava from a local herb shop and it was powdered it said 'for external use only' on the bin we got it from.
It was like $5 for a sizable sack, so i bought it and i was wondering if i just need to add a few tablespoons of kava kava to water and drink that or is this not 'instant kava'

after using about half my kava i decided I cant drink it anymore. I seem to have some really weird reactions and day after hangovers. I generally feel good on the kava but everytime at some point i just want to puke, no matter how slow i drank the concoction. and the next day i feel fuzzier than if i would have smoke a quarter oz by myself and get up the next day. seems to effect my mentality for the next few days, cant concentrate, feel off, and it gives me really bad static vision

i'm also noticing that people say its good for headaches, but occasionally i develop headaches from drinking it. is it the godawful taste or just that i haven't ate enough food before i drank it?

Has anyone tried 100% pure grape juice (fresh) as a mixture? Its pretty good at covering up most bad flavors.

Orange juice works well too. I heard that vitamin C has a chemical reaction with whatever is in the kava that makes it taste so bad and oxidizes it so that it leaves the drink. Whether or not this is true it does seem that any juice with high vitamin C content works good at masking the taste, almost tastes good (I add a tablespoon and a half with a cups worth of juice and blend on puree for 2 minutes, strain through a mesh filter and drink).

Do you guys drink down the powder and everything? I keep reading these elaborate extractions where you strain the kava repeatedly through a bag with oil and lecithin to help extract everything. Is there some reason people don't just drink the powder along with the water?

I put the powder in the strain and strain out all the nasty shit. makes it a little easier to drink.
I've yet to try a big dose on Kava b/c of the taste. my next recipe shall be milk and ice cream. if its good enough to drink down, i'll drink 6-9 cups.

dosed some kava. i used vanilla bean + milk. guess what
it still tastes like shit. Grape juice turns out to be the best of what i've tried. but I'm in a very euphoric state. I'll be sad when I come down =(
well my kava is gone now. I won't be trying it anytime soon unless I travel to Fiji or the taste starts getting better.

Such a failed first post.
Try to check how old a thread is before reviving it. And you're link is broken.

It works if you delete the extra space after the link, but it's not really informational, just a place to buy it. Obviously a rep of the site that fails to be remotely sneaky in her advertising.
