unemployment is still government mandated wealth redistribution, if you retire without ever paying in, you loose. I'm all for voluntary insurance, but screw mandating people to contribute.

Not for nothing but it's peanuts. Nor is it wealth redistribution. It is government mandated insurance. Like you have to pay to drive a car. Maximum I ever had to pay for any employee was around $800 a year. After I had a history of never laying anybody off it was half that.

Unemployment insurance is not taken from your paycheck. It is not a tax.

it is in pennsylvania.

That's different from the two states I worked in but OK

And your own employment inadequacy has no bearing on his earnings.

taxes are taken from my paycheck and given to other people. some of these people make more being on unemployment than i do by working. i make less so that they may make more - even past the point where they are receiving more income than i am. what's more, i work and they do not. i think that's pretty screwed up.

Umm no, pumpkin, he is collecting based on he what he already paid into the system for his unemployment insurance. Tough shit. Get a better job.

How can you be for unemoloyment yet against welfare? Unemployment is the same shit... just another bunch of money you're forced to pay into by the goverment which pay for some asshole that doesn't know how to do his job right? Why not make it just like health care.. optional and you can only reap the benefits if you chose to ante up?

There's actually relatively strict criteria for being eligible for unemployment, at least in PA.
Being a major fuckup, I believe, disqualifies you. I know failing any drug test does for sure, and getting fired for being tardy / late also *can*.. but I believe if you have proof such as a doctor's note that at least one (or it might be the *last*, i'm not entirely clear..) call-off was legit, you're in the clear.

Unemployment insurance is NOTHING at all like welfare. You can't collect if you've never paid (or been paid for) and you can't collect if you get fired for cause or quit and you can't collect if you don't try to get work to their satisfaction. Welfare? A little different.

Is that just for your state/... or is that the way it works on the federal level?

It's actually sounding more like social security. I get those mailings from them once a year telling me how much I've put in and how much I can get out if I become disabled.

I'm with you on this one. Unemployment is at the most half of what you were earning when you were fired or layed off. Plus the state immediately starts checking that you are going to job interviews and actively seeeking out employment. If you aren't they arrange job interviews for you with companies that you don't want to work for. On top of all of that, there is a limit to how long you can collect unemployment.

Given all of that, plus the fact that most people rely on the income they are used to receiving to pay for housing food and whatever else and then all of a sudden they are earning at the most half of that, the incentive to get off of uninsurance is very high. Uninsurance can help you from going unexpectedly bankrupt but doesn't really help you break even.

I used to work at a bank as a teller

I would see people deposit unemployment checks alongside paychecks ALL THE TIME.

Also, you would see wealthy housewives whose husbands were rich deposit their completely unnecessary unemployment checks. Or people getting paid under the table with personal checks also drawing unemployment.

the whole unemployment thing pisses me off. I've been unemployed for months at a time and have never asked for an unemployment check. It just seems wrong to me. I'm unemployed right now, going on 2 months, and I have no intention of asking the government for anything.

Once you exercise this freedom you've lost all control over what you do, what is produced, and how it is produced. And in the end, the product doesn't belong to you. The only way you can avoid bosses and jobs is if you don't care about making a living. Which leads to the second freedom: the freedom to starve."

That is pretty messed up. I only went on unemployment once, after I got unexpectedly layed off and was living in an expensive aparment in San Francisco, so I appreciated not having to panic about where my rent was going to come from, until I opened my first bi-weekly check and looked at the number... $131 and change. Fortunately the severance pay from losing my job ended up being in the thouasands, plus a whole bunch of paid vacation I never took. Three years later I still have to go through a bunch of bullshit every tax year because of that $131 check (I found another job the following week).

My personal experience is that unemployment is basically more hassle than good money. But I guess your perspective is that it is a system that people cheat on a daily basis, and I'll take your word for it. My only hope is that at least some of them get caught and are fined up the ass.

Unemployment is fucking awesome. I just maxed out my benefit and had to stop collecting. Got to get a job now, bummer. I was able to collect for 6 months. I worked like an asshole 7 days a week between 60 and 80 hours a week for about 10 months than I quit and got a seasonal job that lasted 3 months and was laid off because the season was over. Since I made so much money when I was working like an asshole I was able to get the maximum rate when I collected I think it was $525 a week. I opted to have federal taxes taken out so I got a little under $900 every 2 weeks. They determine your rate by going back a year and base the rate on your best quarter. You'll generally collect half what you made in your best quarter from the previous year.
The 6 month vacation was awesome. I've been doing the working man thing since High School and getting nowhere. Unless you love your job working just to pay the bills is a suckers game. You'll never get anywhere; maybe you'll get a raise, promotion, transfer, etc. But, in the long run are you anywhere better off than when you first started? I know, I've done it for the last nearly 10 years and seen a lot of people who have been at a company for years and they're not any better off. I'm in a position where I can make such a statement because I don't have a family to support and can say "fuck it". If you have a wife and or kids it's kind of hard to just say fuck it and not work. Being on unemployment gave me the chance to realize that I would rather be broke and homeless than have to go to a job I hate every day.

I've been on corporate welfare for years. I got over $20,000 in dividends outside of retirement this year already. As long as I hold onto the shares I'll continue getting dividends.
