You do not HAVE to solder it, you could just twist the wire around the contacts and use some electric tape, but soldering it would be a lot better.
on a side note make sure the potentiometer is rated for the voltage and amps that you will be using it for... or it will burn out or short out
good luck

If you are experienced with soldering, I would go for it. "Do it once do it right" as they say.
Either way heat shrink tubing is a good cheap investment. You can still shrink the tubing over the connection even if you just twist the wires and it will still be safer and stronger than wrapping it in elctrical tape.

I find glue guns to be very useful as replacement for electric tape and shrink tubing, if you have one.

First, the motor better be DC or it won't work with a pot. Second, make sure the watt rating on the pot matches the watts of the DC motor or you'll melt it. If the potentiometer has solder terminals you should solder. Many come with sta-con type connectors, so you'd crimp your wires to a connector and slide it on. The bottom line is the connection has to be tight. Solder will make a good tight connection. Tape will only insulate, but not provide for good conductivity.
The pot goes in series with the motor. A 100K ohm pot has way too much resistance. I'd look for a 150 ohm. RR

Not exactly true, but using a pot in the first place isn't always a good idea either. Many pots are rated for just 1/2 watt. Believe me, I've burned them out.
You would want to wire it up as a variable resistor, not a voltage divider, so solder (or wire) the middle terminal to either the left or the right terminal.
Middle + left (as you are looking at it front on) = increasing resistance as it goes clockwise. So you probably want the middle terminal and the right terminal hooked up together. Then, you do this:
BTW, this works best with a computer fan:
+voltage---------------- | M | right terminal \ / <--symbol for resistor, in this case its a 100 ohm to 1k pot, type B if you can find it (linear) \ Middle and left terminal (not connected to right terminal | ground or -voltage----
I know I'm terrible with ascii schematics, also if you have a 1/2 watt (nice and fat) 1K resistor, put that in parallel (left lug and right lug)
But you dont always need a potentiometer
