Marmite
    #7545812 - 10/22/07 05:55 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Last week someone posted a topic about a tek the found soomewhere, it was in PDF format.

It seemed a bit outdated and overcomplicated,

But one thing it mentioned seemed interesting.

It said something like, disolve ??ml of marmite in ??ml of boiling water and soak ??substrate?? It stated that marmite helped to speed up germination

Quote:

A heaped table
spoon of marmite is
added to a pouring jug.
Marmite, vegimite, or
yeast extract’ is used to
help quicken the germination
time of the
spores.
Fig 9.

I wonder if this is true or at the time was thought to be true then later discovered that it didnt really matter.

I was thinking of trying this with PF Tek.

Apparently know one knows? I was wondering the same. Found it in the pdf.  It's not mentioned by Paul stamets in his book at all, but it worked for somebody...

Yeast extract is fantastic additive for agar but don't add it to bulk substrates or grains.

It makes for a "healthier" thicker visually appealing culture. I don't know if it really speeds up spore germination but the mycelium will look better at least on the agar.

Hey man, this is a little late of a response but I'm reading a paper out of china on hericium cultivation where they have some data on yeast extract and found this thread while procrastinating. In a lot of research papers on cultivating wood lovers seems like they often supplement with yeast extract as we well as molasses. My understanding is that they're dissolving it in the water they add to their sub before they add it, just like you're suggesting. Have you tried this since this post? I'll be experimenting with marmite and lab grade yeast extract in the next months and from the papers I've read it seems to have a proven benefit if done well.

I haven't seen this done on any non-wood lovers, but I'm also reading mostly about wood lovers so I'm likely just ignorant.

The table for nitrogen sources the hericium paper tested (link to the actual paper above the table):
