i assume that no one is finding anything active? With all this rain I would expect some recent photos. Did the cold/dry spell we had end the season? Saturday is my last day for hunting. Maybe I will see some of you folk

I found some Psilocybe cyanofriscosa's in Marin on Sunday.
Sorry, no pics, I was just a few feet from a major highway.
I should have photographed them though - I was wearing a yellow construction vest, it would have looked like I was surveying and picking up litter.

that dry east wind we had before the last storms did a lot of them in
this is normal right now for many patches I saw today, and not many pins either, but there still probably will be some while it still rains in scattered places...some of these were saveable after drying out

also witnessed a suicide at the Caltrain station today..It was in the news..no fun seeing that at all

Don't give up all hope yet. I went for another bike ride today with (borat voice) much success! Very nice! It was a beautiful day today and I had a great time on two wheels.
I started off by finding some of these:
Gross! I guess that comes with the territory. I need to get out to Marin more often. Well at least they put the cap back on it.
Anyway, I was happy to find a small group of friscosas to start off the day right. They were starting to decompose, but were definitely worth picking. No pics of them in the ground because I was too excited and yanked them. After that I rode around to a few spots I haven't been in a while and was able to work up a bunch of cyans. There were some old, sun toasted, rotting specimens around, but I gave them the ol' species-proliferation roundhouse kick. There were also a decent number of pins in most spots today as well.
I liked the looks of this one so I got a little macro shot. Thats why I say don't give up. I found pins at almost every patch.
I ended the day at the beach for a nice sunset.

Here's the harvest:
The decomposing friscosas are in the lower right corner.
This isn't a great picture, but for some reason I enjoy it when they grow in little clusters like this.
My only regret is that I wish I went out earlier so I could have covered more ground before it got too dark to see. I would also love to get out to Marin next time and avoid the bulk of the diseased heroin needles, crazy people and weirdo gay blowjob meeting grounds. Sighhh, back to work tomorrow.

Is it neccessary to dump wood chips on top of your patches at the end of each season? How long does it take for the Mycelium to eat the chips? Im wondering because I dont want to lose my patches.

to mark my spot and because I know the species LOVES this stuff. This does not mean that you folk do not have to finish the job. There used to be a nice mat of wood chips and now its just dirt,
as for adding chips to your patches it all depends. If there is plenty of food for the mushrooms than it isnt a problem. The beds that cc and i are talking about are just dirt now.
I believe this picture os from the bed in question'

it looks like it is from that spot. I do not know for sure. But we do know that is what the dirt looks like up there. No more chips

I took a look around today - went by the grass patch and found a handful of mature cyans but only two pins.
I also took a quick look in the park proper and found some scattered cyans. I didn't see a single pin. It was a quick look so don't get too discouraged if you plan on hunting this weekend.
Overall, there's a lot less mushrooms growing out there. The season is definitely winding down, if not ending altogether.
Still...it would be cool if we could keep this thread going for a full year. It seems possible, what with those warm temp psilocybes - and the subbs will be popping up in three or four months!
Regardless, here's to a great season all.

I got some info about covering with more chips..assuming there's stil mycelium in that dirt, yes, they will grow upwards into the new chips..I've had a number of spots regularly covered with more chips by various cities over the years, and sometimes they won't fruit for a year, and then 2 years later kaboom! ( in some cases covered with 6 inches or more of chips)
depends on the strain too and as long as it's reasonably good type of chips
some spots will totally eat through a couple inches of chips in one year, and unless you keep adding them, it will dissapear.
and that's one big advantage people with cars have over bikes..>> being able to add big bags of chips
I've lost more than a few spots over the years just because it's too hard to get out there with lots of chips. ( spots too big, too far away, etc)(other times it just gets raked by the city, gardners, who knows)
other spots don't need alot of chips, just a few pounds sometimes, and are worth the effort because they are so dense and explode when well fed
either way, from now till spring is the best time to do it, after the peak fruiting, but while it's still raining

>assuming there's stil mycelium in that dirt
There is... It's really sad, I'll find these really miniscule little mushrooms fruiting from ONE CHIP buried in the dirt. If you pull it up, you'll see strands of mycelium reaching out in the dirt, attached to the few scattered chips all mud soaked and completely white. There is definitely mycelium, but it is starving.
Here is an example from early in the season of one of the mini friscosas from the dirt patch:

>either way, from now till spring is the best time to do it, after the >peak fruiting, but while it's still raining
Exactly. Dumping chips on an actively fruiting patch will set it into vegetative growth, so you definitely don't want to feed a patch until you know it is done fruiting for the season, since you won't see results for at least a year either way.

I am working on a mobile identification guide for low/med resolution mobile phones right now. I plan on incorporating general areas around the Northern California/Bay Area, including popular species found for those corresponding areas. I'm using some mobile webdevelopment tools with Dreamweaver in order to keep mobile bandwidth use at a low, thus optimizing speeds loading photos. I'm working with a Nikon D80 and a macro lens for the photography. If anyone would like to help me with this project, I am more than willing to provide transportation to known areas for some photography/identification work. Send me a message if you would like to go out in the field perhaps tomorrow, or throughout this weekend. I will post some good finds once I can set up a working SD card reader.
