Sorry to change the subject a Little.
Have you guys ever hunt shrooms in Sonoma county? I lived in Monte Rio for a couple of years. All sorts of mushrooms would pop up in the Fall.
I know very little about them but I do remember seeing a lot of wavy caped ones. I picked a couple to see if they would stain blue. They did not.

Nice, good to see some morels in here. Too bad some of them are well gone. Oh well, now you know of a new patch.

it looks as if I have 2 if not 3 different types of actives growing here. All of which would have grown from old stem butts but not physically cultivated. i never thought much about it, just trashed them and thought "we'll see".
This one is unknown sort of. It could be one of three but doesn't look like a cyan, cyanfib, or azure.

Pretty sure these are of the cyclone complex as Stamets says but they are far away from any place that I have trashed stems.

This whole area is covered in mycelium so hopefully more of the stuff I want will pop up but I did find 3 types of intruders. Most of which were taken out by the weed eater yesterday. Any ideas on what it is?

Here are my babies. I am so happy for them. Once a 100% id is made then their spores will be used for further expansion since we know that they will fruit in this area.

this one, btw, is the possible Japanese species (azure like), the infamous one from Richmond
I went by the original spot recently and it turns out the city raked the whole area and seeded it with new grass seed..Hardly any chips either, so digging it up and moving it was a very good idea. At least now it's surviving in 3 new spots with plenty of food, like this
it's still going fine despite having never fruited last year or this year so far. This is now going on year 2 with no fruits(because of the weather) It's getting bigger too, but the fact is that MOST places around the bay are not fruiting at all. Not just cyans, but many species. This isn't anywhere near the 1997 season or even 2005.
I've traveled over 400 miles on bike in the last 2 weeks around the bay, and in general, it's even worse than last year. There'[s huge areas where there should be a kazillion red hypholomas and there's nothing (mycelium is still there in nearly all places tho)

auweia , can you post another picture of that area ^^^^ I am having a hard time googling it.
Joking aside. I have 4-5 prints, is it worth working with? Or, should I just stick to azures, cyans, and cyanofibs

> Yes, that's right, Alan. I just don't like this scientific name because I still can't spell it without a copy/paste job ( or even know how to pronounce it)
The only reason I can spell it is that I wrote the wikipedia article on it.
> but this isn't exactly the problem. It is my understanding that this is NOT an exact match for subaeruginascens for a couple of reasons, primarliy because it does not get wavy around thge edges like cyans do.
I didn't see anything in the description of Psilocybe subaeruginascens that says that it gets wavy around the edges.
> It is true that the closest thing possible is subaeruginascens, but this is also a bit of a stretch and I remember Peter saying this at one point, but there is really nothing else closer than that, so that is why they're sticking with subaeruginascens.
The whole idea of putting a name on to a mushroom is ridiculous. Every species description is a bucket that many similar mushrooms fit into. If it seems to fit, I use it. Unless you are a splitter. Then you make your own little bucket for each thing you see.
> but it still is not a very good match
I did my own comparison and it looks like a good match to me.
> In fact, I'm pretty sure now that friscosas are cyanescens 'modified' as a result of the Bay Area weather because the shape of cyanescens allows for more dehydration than does the friscosa shape ( the upside down umbrella allows for more moisture retention)
Sounds good.
> the main problem as it stands now, is that P subaeruginascens is not well documented from Japan, so there is not much to compare it.
Peter Werner has examined the type collection.
> I would definately NOT classify this in the Stunzii range, that's for sure > do these look like stunziis or Psilocybe subaeruginascens to you?
They are in section stuntzii because of their annulus.
> do you really know what Psilocybe subaeruginascens looks like in the wild?...nah, me neither..That stuff grows in Japan, right?
I have never seen any growing in Japan. There are some photos on the net, I am not sure how well identified they are.
Here is the description:
