Hey guys, Im in Cupertino, and for the last 2 years I've been looking at this site and others to figure out how to identify mushrooms, yet I've gone out numerous times 1-2 days after rain and found almost nothing or next to nothing. yesterday for instance, i went on a hike up a path littered with horsedung. I found several mushrooms, but nothing that looks too similar to any active species. is there something I'm doing wrong? Or am I too far south to hunt for cyans and azures? And if so, could you guys give me a rough locality to hunt in? I've looked through tons and tons of mulched barkbits, wood, oak, pine, all after the rain.

Do a lot of reading.
The mushrooms you are looking for do not like dung nor bark. They prefer woodchips in urban environments, not in the woods. Ps. azurescens does not grow in CA, but Ps. cyanescens does. You are not too far south, but you may have more luck hunting if you head north to the bay.

I remember driving up to arcata and hunting in the forest for cyans when I was 20. Ohh to be young. All I found were king boletes. Then I got a tip to head to the dunes. We drove out to the ocean and looked around and thought mushrooms cant grow here there are no wood chips. Ahhh ignorance is bliss.
Now I just study the photos that people post here and poach the patches, just flat out rop and rape the patches then I spray fungucide on it so that no one else will ever pick there.

Thanks.
These specimens have responded well to the water I've been pouring on them a couple times a week. Hopefully this rain will mean the end to that practice - watering a public area is awkward.

So after work me and laska went out and checked a few spots.

We tryed a new spot and after 10 minutes, Laska finds these. Its her first find of the season!

Awesome, now all we need is for the clouds to stick around for a while.

Seem a little barren in my neck of the woods despite all the rain. I know wyattb's still finding some in Humboldt, but I'm not looking in Humboldt.
Possible reasons:
1. I am still a hopeless n00b, and I'm not looking in the right places: Maybe too close to the ocean. Maybe not far enough away. Maybe I'm not looking under bent over grass diligently enough. Maybe the grass has the wrong kind of undergrowth. Maybe this county just doesn't have the right kind of sand.
2. The two days of frost last week did more damage than I'm prepared to admit.
3. There is hardly any DEAD grass here. It's all green or yellow-green. No brown stuff, so maybe there's not enough decaying matter yet.
4. All the other reasons a novice like me doesn't even know to think of.
Tomorrow I have a new place to check out that was suggested to me. If it doesn't pan out, I may go traveling this weekend.

Chances are that you're looking in spots that are well known to others. Get out first thing in the morning before the other hunters wake up. Until you are able to find your own private patches it's an "early bird catches the worm" deal.

yeah man I know of 8 differnt patches in humboldt ,It doesn't matter that much how far off the ocean you are, that 2 day frost was great it sent them in to high gear,I'll be out there.Cal-trans does nice job at sreading chips along side of highway exits, etc. watch out for chp s' .these highway patches are rumored to be huge,as they are risky to pick along side of, best time is early raining or foggy mornings,in camo on belly ,I've found monster size cyans 3 inches off of pavement,

I am going to go hunting today, Im sick of 2 seasons of hunting around in every concievable spot down here in san jose and cupertino and not finding anything, so Im headin down to frisco. I just had a couple questions I hope you guys can answer before i set off.
1. How do i distinguish friscosas from cyanscens? Do they both blue or is that only cyans?
2. Is there a major giveaway to when a mushroom is a cyan, other than the wavy caps, blue stains?
3. I have been to SF only about 3 times, I wanted to know if it would be effective hunting around at golden gate park, and if not there i was going to go directly north of frisco into the state recreation area.
4. I found a mushroom yesterday growing out of woodchips, about 6 inches tall, white with a slimy layer on the cap with a nipple. Other than the nipple it was a pretty perfectly circled white cap. The stipe has no veil and the underside shows spores with a reddish/pinkish tint. What kind of mushroom could this be? Ill post pictures soon

Your questions can be answered by researching the information already available on this site. There is no easy substitute for doing your own work and ultimately, it will serve you better.
This is not the thread to post mushroom identification requests. Use the format stickied at the top of the forum and start your own post.
Finally, don't call the city 'frisco' if you want to be taken seriously.

Nice finds Wyattb!
I hope to find a fraction of that tomorrow.
Those look like really long stems for cyans.
Beautiful!
