alder works fine but it isnt the best. The reason why stamets says alder in all of his books is becasue it grows like weeds in the pnw, it grows fast and wild. Fir, oak, walnut all work great and probably just as good

I do not think hickory or mesquite are good. They are considered incense wood or something.

Naw. 6 months for sure. Don't waste your time...
Quote:
I. Mushroom Hunting Forum rules
6. No asking WHEN or WHERE mushrooms, or a specific mushroom species will grow. This includes, asking what habitat a mushroom[s] can be found- or their preferred fruiting conditions. This can be very simply answered by using the "search posts" feature: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php Asking if "now is a good time to look for mushrooms". Or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. Each mushroom species has a different rate of growth- some mushrooms, like Ganoderma species, take quite a while to mature, compared to mushrooms like Conocybe, which take only one night to show up, and mature, and are all shriveled by the end of the next day. Conversely, Ganoderma persist for months, only disappearing when the bark beetle infestation has done enough damage, that the fruiting body falls to the ground, and slowly gets eaten away, and any remainder, crumbles into the top soil. These issues are sort of redundant, as addressed in rules #4 and #5, yet needed to be explained more concisely, due to many people seeing these questions as loop-holes since they were not directly described.

That's not true. Hickory works great for woodlovers. It's just as good as alder, maybe better. Hickory is a type of tree, not an "incense wood" or whatever that is. Btw, mesquite is hardwood tree which grows throughout the Southwest. The wood chips are used when smoking foods because it imparts a nice flavor on meat and fish.

I know its a tree, shoot. I meant what curecat said. I wasnt sure about these trees. They used to say that eucalyptus was bad and would produce awful tasteing mushrooms. This is untrue, shiitake growers and the cyans in ggp use this for a substrate. You can buy bags of eucalyptus landscape mulch at osh for 5 bucks

They say that, or that with Laetiporus sp. it can cause gastric upset, yet, everyone here in the Bay Area seems to dismiss this rumour... odd.
I don't like Chicken of the Woods, and almost everyone from south CA would say, "oh, you must have picked it off Eucalyptus". But I had picked them from Coast Live Oak, so then they just thought I was nuts.

I had an interesting find. Hopefully there will more of these. There were hyphal aggregate's (primordia) all over. Two primordia are circled in blue

3 types of cyan's
the one on the left was growing out of pine needles and soil the one in the middle was growing out of dune grass and sand and the last one was growing out of woodchips and grass
