some folks aren't finished with me yet, all because I dared to post photos here

ya see ?  this is why people like Stamets sacrifice themselves for the rest of us. Bless him, he doesn't need to go through the gruesome underbelly of the - location crowd  :whistling:

seriously, that's all I've ever seen at any of the meets at MSSF reagrding this species..

once you have the ID down, and the habitat down, what's left? location location location

the mission, should you choose to accept it > find out the location

Do NOT spend the time required looking for yourself, finding your own spots

> no, but ask Stamets if there's any updates on these friscosas

I asked him about them today and he said that they fall into the P. cyanofibrillosa bucket.

He also told me that Cordyceps militaris and one other species can be fruited without an insect, but C. sinensis required bugs to fruit.

> I was told at the Humboldt mushroom fair,Some guy By the name Peter Warner is studing these spieces and is going to Classify them as cyans.

We had dinner and beer with Peter Werner today. I suspect that he paid for everyones food and beer and then took off without asking for any money.

He said that friscosas are not much like cyanofibrillosa, the spores in friscosa are much too large for cyanofibrillosa and there are cystidia differences.

I think just you and damien got lucky and no one realized that your tab was incorporated.  But still, totally tight of him.

Peter and Workman have independently come to the same conclusions based on microscopic details- they are likely a phenotypic variant of Ps. cyanescens, or something incredibly similar.  Peter made a good point, that if you were IDing based on microscopic features alone, they would decide Ps. cyanescens without haste.

Paul said the same thing to me when I asked him last year.  He has not offered any data to validate the claim that they are microscopically or genetically closer related to Ps. cyanofibrillosa rather than Ps. cyanescens, though I have inquired... So I am quite skeptical.  Dismissive even, considering Workman and Peter have noted the same distinctions separate of one anothers work.

Paul was at the same bar we went to afterwards...  I proposed Peter duke it out and hurl the excess random mushrooms from the fair at Paul, you know, to settle the dispute.
He said he would drop in on the debate soon..

Aaauuuweeiiaaa, I was hoping to meet you this time!! Come on!  Just ignore the surly old men.  I have yet to see any of them bite.

I got roped into spending far too much time behind a display table saturday.  This will not happen Sunday.

Hope to see you nerds there.

it was good running into you folk. I didnt make it to stamets speech because we were busy poaching patches. Pick what was left of this patch then kicked the shit out of it so that it will not fruit for anyone else for the rest of the season.

Sui, cc, alan, good meeting you guys and gals.

I did make it in to see stamets afterwards and showed him my specimen and pics of my patch. His eyes lit up and he smiled a said it was nice and that the mushroom was part of the cyanofib/cyclone complex, which we knew. He gave me some tips on getting another flush out of it. I cant wait.

I showed up a bit later than i had intended today, on account of falling asleep before i could set my alarm clock.  Never the less, I had fun.  Showed up around 2:30-3pm, just in time for Pauls presentation on Hallucinogenic Mushrooms.
It was a very amusing lecture, though much of the info was familiar.
One comment he made (and subsequently referred to later into the speech) had alan, suimish, peter and i squirm a little.  I wrote down what he said right away, so that I would not forget and accidentally misrepresent what he said.  I am confident that this quote is an accurate dictation.  If peter, suimish, alan, or laska disagree, please speak up.

He was showing a photo of his hat with Ps. cubensis spore printing on the brim, and explaining the purpose of dispersing Psilocybe spores in this manner, when taking long trips such as those that would require an airplane.

"To this day 10 years ago, I came to the Fungus Fair after having hunted cyanofibrillosa  in Washington State.  In 2002 someone found cyanofibrillosa growing here at the Oakland Museum, and it has since spread all over the Bay Area, and is quite common."

We stuck around for the audience questions.  Accordingly, Peter raised the fact that the mushrooms recently being found in the Bay Area are NOT Ps. cyanofibrillosa as originally suspected.  Paul interrupted with "Yes, but you said they were semilanceata", Peter said that he never said that, and Paul insisted that he did.  Peter was interrupted with "Yes, and you told me that they looked like semilanceata" about 5 or 6 times while he was trying to explain to Paul his reasons for concluding that they were not Ps. cyanofibrillosa, and was finally able to include that microscopically, they resemble Ps. cyanescens.
Needless to say, Paul was surprising terse and almost hostile in his response, in contrast with how he addressed other audience members.

As expected, the fibs looking like semis deal stemmed from a misunderstanding or foggy memory of what Peter had communicated to Paul, mentioning that he noticed at least a superficial similarity between the microscopic characteristics of Ps. semilanceata and Ps. cyanofibrillosa (the real one, relative to the type specimens).

It was suggested that the discourteous counter most likely resulted from being questioned/disputed publicly.  However, I excuse that as irrelevent, as anyone should be able to back up the assertions they make publicly, ESPECIALLY when they are in a position of high regard and influence.  I worry that we will be hearing this unsettled Psilocybe species increasingly described as Ps. cyanofibrillosa in the Bay Area, as a result of this anecdote.

It's frustrating.

well he says that he might be responsible for the fibs at the museum but the first finds were well before the fair came to Oakland.
I first time i heard him speak about ps someone in the audience came up afterwards and asked Paul to id a mushrooms and he said congrats, its a fib. This was about 8 years ago.
Funny thing is, I have met 3 people who have all claimed that they found the first fib in the bay and that they were the one at the fair that showed stamets the mushroom for id during that lecture some many years ago.

Yes and yes.

I know the Oakland Museum finds were not the first collection.

And I too have met numerous people with the same claim that they were the first to discover the mushrooms.  No matter, none of them will be granted credit, only the first to publish a scientific journal article will be credited (nudge nudge Peter!).  It is impossible to figure out who originally found these.

The saga continues!!!
