They tend to pin from the wood/soil interface. I never had much luck with logs unless they were buried, but even then the performance was poor. You'd do better with alder chips, so there would be more mycelium in contact with the surrounding soil, which is required for fruiting.

Agreed, logs don't work well with wood loving Psilocybes. Although the image of Psilocybe quebecensis in "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World" is intriguing.
