At Somneniya Bay we joined some Koryak people who were fishing and feasting. I watched as an wrinkled old woman with streaks of gray in her black hair ate a red mushroom. Later when she started to dance, I could not believe that she is 96 years old. The soft tundra soil vibrated with the rhythmic stomp of people's feet and beating drums. I sat spellbound in the soft golden light of 10 PM. Did I just go through a time warp or something?? I'm sure glad that Misha is here to translate the old woman's invitation. Next spring she wants me to come back with Chris to see a caribou birthing. WOW, I wonder if Reeve-Aleutian Airways has a frequent flyer program. This trip just keeps getting more fantastic!!

Dude, don't be so hard on Sclorch. The poor fellow's a quadriplegic typing with his tongue on a keyboard attached to his chest - that's why anybody hardly gets angry with him here. Can you blame him for being bitter?

Oh, by the way, he's also a world renowned physicist.

Not necessarily, Sclorch. As a brief insight into continued mushroom use among a latter-day shamanic society (indeed, the v. tribal group that gave us the word 'shaman' in the first place) I would say that this post is right on topic. It's just a pity that more details on the mushroom rituals were not provided.
