Death angel

Just wanted to post a good pic i shot of a half grown Amanita bisporigera or "destroying angel". these grow everywhere around where i pick and just wanted to say heads up! They look quite different young from when they are mature. This is one very big reason to not eat anything without a positive id,I knew someone who died from what we suspect must have been one of these in a mature stage while gathering puffballs.

You all mistaked a mature one? How did you manage that? I think you meant premature, or sprouting. It would be hard to mistake something 4/6 inches off the ground from something ground level...

Nevertheless, a very dangerous, but beautiful, mushroom.

No I was not there, But she often gathered puffballs to eat and was poisined after eating a meal consisting of them. Considering they grow everywher here and when mature can look like small puffballs, also are the only somewhat look a like powerfull enough to cause death, "we" (the people who knew her) came to that conclusion.

Nice specimen, but it could actually be a similar looking mushroom.

The ring is collar-like rather than the normal skirt-like, and I can see no sign of the volva that should be obvious. I'm thinking that your specimen could actually be a Leucoagaricus naucinus, a mushroom similar enough in appearance to the Destroying Angels that it is not recommended for eating.

Whatever this particular specimen is, a warning reminding people to avoid the all white mushrooms that resemble the Destroying Angels is a good thing. There are too many people out there who are poisoned by Amanitas for it to ever be taken lightly.

Happy mushrooming!
