Bay Area active pin?, stinkhorn egg

Here are two finds from the Bay Area today:
1) My girlfriend turned over a chunk of stump to look for bugs and found this pin on a small piece of wood in the soil. The veil and nearby fibers on the stem appeared to be lightly bluing as did the smaller 'pins' running down the wood. There was also some light green-blue bruising on the cap. The stem did not readily stain blue.

2)Clathrus ruber egg. The egg didn't have any scent and my girlfriend said the mature specimen didn't either. I was scared to get close.

it is tough to tell if that is an active pic. it sure looks like one but if you would have not been so greedy and let it grow up and then picked it we would be able to tell for sure. Look at the other little mushrooms that you killed

I think what tahoe is getting at is use scissors Dont rip the mycelium out of the ground, also you should have probubly let it mature more to get a descent id.

I should have said that the mycelium was not damaged and the specimens were returned to the environment as found. They were growing from a solitary piece of wood amongst soil and the mycelium had not spread to the soil.

Don't worry, they will continue to grow if there is adequate moisture, since they are still attached to the wood. The little pinheads look kinda like aborts, so they might stop growing.
