Strange health condition

I have this one spot on my leg halfway up my thigh that often feels numb. I noticed it a few weeks ago. Sometimes I will wake up at night and my entire thigh will be numb, centered around that one perpetually numb spot. When I work out, sometimes I can feel an "explosion," not exactly painful, but just extremely noticible occur in that one spot. Well today, I noticed that the spot has become PAINFUL. Even just brushing it with my hand cases discomfort and pressing it causes pain. I did a walk today and I noticed that I was starting to feel the pain as I was walking.
This worries me. Any idea of what this could be? I don't have health insurance yet and it'll be another few months before I will. What should I do? I was thinking I might go to an acupuncturist and see if they could help me.
I'm thinking it might be nerve damage. I have cut myself a lot on my leg, back when I was doing that sort of thing. Maybe something happened...I don't know. Nerve damage is common with self-injurers but I thought that I successfully evaded that peril.
But I'm starting to get concerned. About a week ago, on the same leg but lower down about three inches above my ankle, there was a ring of swelling, like a band around my leg had filled with fluid. I ignored it and it went away in a day.
So YEAH, it's all happening to my left leg. The main concern is that one spot though. What do you think is up?

I don't know, but it doesn't sound good. I don't wanna get you worried, but if I were you I would urgently contact a neurologist. Don't let it grow into something more serious, whatever it is, feeling numb just doesn't sound right. Take care and keep us up to date.

Yeah, MushroomTrip, I definitely have been feeling like I should see a doctor about this. It's just not normal for me to have things like this occur to my body. I was always rather sturdy my entire life and now all these strange occurances have happened to my left leg all within the past couple of weeks. The problem is that in the US I cannot afford to see a doctor without insurance. I wonder if I could set up my own insurance so that I don't have to wait on my employer. I'm in Massachusetts and here, it's the law that you have to have insurance, but if your employer offers it, then you can't get the state insurance, but my employer won't let me have it until I've been employed there for three months.
It's just one of those things that I can't worry about until I know more and have the means to seek help. That's why I was thinking acupuncture, because it might be easier to swing financially. I just can't get into any more debt. My credit sucks. I would hate to see a doctor and then be unable to pay and have them lower my credit score even more.
The society here blows.

Well acupuncture helps with a lot of health problems, but it also make it work. Take note that you have no clue what this is all about and it might aggravate your situation. I wish I could tell you more, but I really don;t know for sure and I don't wanna give you a bad advice. All I can say is that I would be extra cautious to acupuncture, at least until you know for sure what's wrong. It sucks that you have to wait because health is one of the most basic stuff that we all should access to when we need it. I checked out the link that lbtchnlgs provided you with and I think it's worth a shot, and you can also look for medical advices online. I think that asking in more places and then comparing the answers could give you a better view about what could be wrong with your leg.
