A spiritual place.

It's been my dream for many years now to go out and build a small commune, village. It's going to take a lot of effort and i will need people to join me on my way to building this. What we need is some investors, those who wish to stay there and help make the village grow. I'm giving myself five years to get things together, money is the main issue, as it will cost a hella lot of money. Greenhouse, glass observatory, eco-housing.
We'll use technologies like Solar and Wind power.
For a location i'm thinking somewhere near a American rainforest, or anywhere near a waterfall, fresh water from a river is what we need. We won't need that much electricity, we can use propaine and build fires to cook food.
In the greenhouse we will foods, drugs, etc. We can have a chicken coop. Farm animals if necessary.
Anyway, tell me your ideas on this if you are interested.
I need people to come together, join me on an adventure of a lifetime. Help me build a home away from home.
Peace, Droz

Build it in Eastern Oregon and I will consider investing. Of course we will need weapons to keep the revenuers away.

I don't know where i want to build it, someplace near a waterfall, or a fresh water river.
Icelander what do you think about the idea?
Could it work?

You have no idea how much of a dream it's been for me, since I was a kid, to go out and do something like that. I've always wanted to live in a "village" far away, surrounded by nature and animals. To work for my food, to put effort into helping the others around me to create a peaceful community. The only thing holding me back from doing something so adventurous currently are my studies. Once I get a better idea of my path after college, I can better gauge my opportunities/things I truly want. Great idea, it's always been a dream as far back as I can remember for me..

It would take a lot of time to prepare (figuring out the surrounding areas, the closest inhabitants to you, the animals of that region, the vegetation, water supplies, climates, dangers to watch for, ect). But something like that can just be spawned into existence withing a few weeks/months. I've always had the goal to be able to live anywhere at anytime by myself in whatever conditions, and be able to survive and create a home wherever I might be. Kinda like survivorman, only much better

Of course it could work. But they usually don't. People being people.

Just some random ideas:
You'd probably want to recruit a doctor, or some kind of medical professional if you want to be as self sufficient as possible. An engineer might also be helpful.
Allow 'families' a private living space. This is a common trait in just about all cultures, and it is this way for a reason. People need their space.
Expect people to want to leave, and allow for new arrivals. This is essential if you want the commune to last.
Keep it low tech. Technology has a way of breaking down, and is expensive to maintain. Only plan infrastructure for what you absolutely need.
Creating a source of income for the community might be a wise idea, it's unlikely that you'll be 100% self sufficient (medicine, contraception, tampons etc.). It could be an internet business selling arts and crafts, or a stall at some local markets selling excess produce.
There would need to be some sort of system for the community to make decisions, as it's unlikely that everyone will agree on everything. Might be an idea to start thinking about possible forms of administration. If it were me, I'd look at what has been successful in the past, and base it off that.
Avoid remote and thick rainforests. They may be rich in food, but they are also much harsher environments to try and live in. Disease becomes an issue, and there is usually an on going struggle between the locals (mosquitoes, ants, bugs and snakes etc.) for territory and food (you can forget about trying to grow traditional crops without pesticide). There is also the issue of living in a remote location (in case someone is seriously hurt) and the weather (hurricanes/cyclones, monsoons/flooding etc.).
The sea is abundant in food resources, much more so then inland areas. Isla San Lucas in Costa Rica would be an ideal location if it weren't for the old prison creating a tourist attraction. It's sheltered from the pacific, has a local town nearby that could be used to source supplies, fresh water, a number or awesome beaches, a jetty, howler monkeys that throw feces at you, and fluorescent plankton in the water just like in the movie 'The Beach'. If I could choose anywhere on earth to start a commune, it would most definitely be there.

I'm with Icelander - E. OR and I'll pitch in.
Not but a few years ago I lived on a ranch out there, up this awesome valley, with a large creek running right through the middle of our land (lots of fish!). Tons of forests, mountains, and wilderness right up the road, and usually you could count the cars that passed by with both hands. Good fertile soil, easy winters in that valley, and just an awesome vibe all around. It would have been PERFECT for a commune or just a super chill place to meet up, and I'll never forgive my family for selling it. A portion of the population out there is old hippies who had the same idea expressed here. That area calls me back like nowhere else I've been.

If we have to rely on experience then I'm off to the conch and clams in the Everglades where the weather is always fair and game always aplenty.

im totally down for anything like this..i love being close to nature, usually in solidarity, as people tend to be inherently evil/greedy
it would be difficult to maintain peace at such a commune for long i believe..but its worth a shot...actaully i think a bunch of the hippy population in the 60/70s did this..
it would be a lot of hard work to create something this great and i would rather walk into one already working in harmony so i didnt dedicate a portion of my life to a dream that might not come true, yet if it did...would make it that much more amazing
