I'm going to meditate and think about it more, as well as do some research, before I make any decision. And I have commitments (school) right now. When I get my driver's license (soon) I'm going to get out of the urbanized Bay Area for a bit, go someplace more natural, and I believe that may help a lot in clearing my head. California is a beautiful state and I'm so tired of the city.

I know how you feel. That's why I got myself a place in the mountains a few months ago. It's very centering, I feel.

I'd like to move out of Toronto and go somewhere with mountains like British Columbia. There's something about mountains that reminds you that life is more than just the rabble of everyday life in the city, you know?
I don't think it's necessary to stay in a city just to prove something, and I don't think we were meant to stay in one place our whole lives. My ego tells me that my city is an ugly smelly grid and I'd be better off outside of it.

This is something I tried not to admit to myself until it became impossible. I was born and raised in the bay area, always had sort of an implicit sense that this was where I belonged, ugly or no. But even if this is my home I need to get out of it for a while.
My family has a little piece of land a few hours up north, past Humboldt county. Very rural, mountainous, woody territory. I'm going to have a stay there as soon as I get that license.

I hope this post doesn't discourage anyone from considering the soothing effects on the psyche that mountains have.

Now that would be a turn off because it means that those people didn't even have the slightest perspective regarding the existence of tectonic plates. I hope this doesn't discourage those who wanna learn geography.

Ya I get it, Orgone's post just struck me as being cynical for cynical sake, but I guess that's just Orgone and I have to accept that

Judging the lives of others and the product of their associations as "degrading, perverted, and spiritually corrosive" is a spiritually corrosive process itself that the monastery WILL NOT heal. Going to the spirit with this attitude is merely elitism, and it will not help you.
I think judging certain ideals as being destructive for you yourself at a particular point time is a necessary part of spiritual development. (On the other hand, I wouldn't judge another person for assuming those ideals on their own spiritual path but simply perceive it as being so.)
Even though a durable spirituality would be all-inclusive and applicable in your native culture, changing your environment can always be beneficial. When you withdraw, you're no longer subject to all those familiar cues and expectations that are put on you. You can eliminate a lot of excess baggage and trim down your own perceived identity.

I think it would be great for you to try a Buddhist monastery for a year. It is very inspiring and refreshing to be around monks and to live as they do. I recently spent 6 months in a Hindu monastery as a monk in training. They only allowed a 6 month max stay first, then they send you home to think about the experience. Then decide if you would like to return. I have made the decision to return and take vows as a monk. I will be leaving in a month to go back.
You can't go wrong with just experiencing it for a short time. It can really change your perspective on life. Good luck to you, and I hope you find what your looking for.

Good points from both of you.

I've been wanting to do exactly this in the last half year or so. I guess my college education and uncertainty is what is holding me back.
Visiting a foreign country and knowing only english is quite an undertaking.
im in the same boat as you...almost halfway through my sophomore year at a private university, almost wishing i never started..but i didnt know what i know now and i would feel horrible to waste my parents money and kill their life dreams of getting their kids through college...
anyways..while im held up in this mess for the next couple of years i have decided to change my field of study to something i am actually interested in, sociology if you care, hopefully after i graduate i will head off somewhere where i can really find myself in this crazy world...good luck to you too man

I would love to join a monastery on a trial basis. A six month stay? That sounds perfect!
Where can we find information on how to get ourselves into a situation like this?

First you could look into the different branches of Buddhism and find the one that seems to suit your temperament. Then maybe go into a forum where many have monastic experience and tell what you seek, and ask what would be recommended. E-sangha would be a good choice for a forum.

Anyone living in the states could look into http://dhammatalks.org/Links.html for monastic training in Cali. Click 'about us' on this site http://www.mettaforest.org/ for more information.
