A rookie grower needs your help!

Hi everyone, I just have a quick question for you guys. I'm looking to start cultivating some shrooms, and was going to start with the tek kit from "The Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide" on this site. It looks like a pretty legitimate way to get some good basic knowledge, and the fact that it is said to produce multiple ounce dry yields out of each attempt is pretty enticing! However, I was wondering about the fruiting stage of that process. It lists a few choices for terrariums, but none of them really appealed to me since I'm not very able to buy an ultra sonic humidifier and don't have a ton of time to spend misting humidity into the terrarium on my own (i'm pretty busy with classes and such).
I was looking at some other processes and came across monstermitch's guide for making a monotub. Now that seems like the best possible choice for me, since it requires little attention and is made out of cheap materials. Is it possible to use one of these monotubs along with the normal PF tek processes that I linked above? If not, is there any other possible terrariums that would work better with my situation? Any knowledge that you could pass on to me would be extremely helpful, thanks!

Monos are awesome.
Yes, you can use PF cakes. Crumbled or sliced.

So I can just drop the cakes in the mono just as I would with any other terrarium? And I need to crumble them first?

your monotub is a big casing, so you would crumble or slice your pfcakes to a spawn(such as coco coir) and when it colonizes, you would layer it, like lasagna, with a casing layer(such as miracle grow moisture control, or vermiculite...in monstermitch's monotub tek, substitute the grain he uses for crubled up pfcakes.
i dont know if it would still be considered a monotub if you just stuck cakes in and let them fruit
all of it sounds complicated when your just getting into it, but youll find its all quite simple, and worth researching. dont be scared to try the things like monotubs, and grains, just jump into it!

thanks just me, that was some good information. I'm not quite sure what all of that means exactly (such as slicing my pfcakes to a spawn) but I'll do a little research to try and figure it out.

wondermonds,
for your terrarium, what you will want to use is perlite. perlite is like a volcanic rock stuff that absorbs incredible amounts of water you can find this at just about any store with a garden center i advise staying away from miracle grow perlite, it will work as a last resort, but be careful with it
yes you could definitely transfer some of the PFtek to a monotub, you can birth your cakes directly into an unopened ziplock bag, then crush it with your fingers until it turns brown and only has a few chunks left then pour that into your pastuerized poo spawn or coir and mix it up

ok, well since i just learned it myself, ill gladly tell you, and research is key wondermonds, this website is an encyclopedia.
but basically you have your colonized substrate and you want it bigger so you can use it in a monotub and do bulk(or at least more than cakes and small casings will provide) and there is substrates that you myc will colonize to, like coco coir and give you a huge mess of colonized substrate.
so if you have cakes, slice them, or crumble them to your bulk substrate, and let it colonize(this is spawning)and when it colonizes it turns into something like a huge cake!
then over this you put a "casing layer", which can be a bunch of different things, the two easiest are probably straight vermiculite, or the miracle grow moisture control....u know what, you should really invest about $40.00 and buy RR's video...go to sponsors, and youll see it, itll show you everything to get you started proper

wonder,
how goes it? did you find the video?
if i knew how to link it, i would. its very beneficial for starters like us, and it seems like as you get familiar with mycology, you can start straying away from word for word teks, and incorporating your own successful practices. best of luck to you!

the only problem you might face is the cakes drying out, if their filtered or sealed though, they should last for quite awhile
