Long term storage: grains>LC?

So I have enough mushrooms for now and I want to store my strain.
I am more comfortable using grain because familiar with how to do a clone using grain, but in my one attempt at an LC, I was unsuccessful.(prob. due to not accurately measuring out the honey ratio)
Is an LC really better to jumpstart a strain than a G2G transfer? To me it seems that having a jar already colonized would run less of a risk for contaminants but maybe im missing something...

an agar wedge in a test tube with a piece of popsicle stick is the best way to store a specific culture long term IMO... RR explains the technique in his video.
if you try to store it on grains it'll just grow invitro (unless i'm missing something here) and an LC will only stay good for so long...

so an grain jar in the fridge would eventually grow invitro? I was under the impression that it would go dormant in the fridge. I would also seal the jar air tight once it colonized.
what im getting at is that im already good with cloning directly to jars... so is it worth it to learn a new method when the one I already know works alright? how long can a grain jar potentially be stored?

Yes because when you do grain to grain you have a lot more air contact and leaves more room for contamination, not just that but if you have grains sitting for awhile they will be a little subborn at growing when they are transfered. It will and can work I have done it several times but I use liquid culture now. You see with liquid culture you can store in the frigerator for a hell of along time and it will still growing pretty quick and by first skipping the germination process which you would have that either way but not only that you can put alot of culture into the grain to speed it up aslong as you don't drown it. But here is what you do. Get some RTV sealant from ace hardware or any hardware store and poke holes in you lids like you would a cake jar. Dab a little RTV on one side let dry alittle then press it down so it dry's flat on the holes flip the lid and do the same to the other that works like a rubberstopper to prevent air contact. Then also drill like a 1/4 hole somewhere on the lid and get 3M medical tape from any Pharmacy or Walgreens. Put some on both sides of the 1/4 hole and use a little super glue or something to rienforcen the tape to the lid. Then you have a filter hole and a spot to drop your syringe.

Another good way is using paper pellets in a test tube - inoculated with a wedge.

I'd store in agar petri in refrigerator rather than grain in refrig.
If you think it needs to be transferred to live, jsut put a wedge on another petri.
I really like the Popsicle idea, maybe make a few and when ready, stick them into substrate!

the reason you use the popsicle is that the mycelium eats the wood and it makes it viable for long term refrigeration .. I got the idea from RR's video its the way he recommends long term strain storage. paper pellets are doing almost the same thing .. they store better on wood or wood products. when ready you just take a small piece and grow it out on agar then inco. with the agar
