Metro refocuses effort on small-time peddlers
    #7539013 - 10/20/07 11:44 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

The Nogales Police Department, Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety and the SCC Metro Task Force have logged 283 arrests so far this year and seized $118,657 in suspected cash proceeds from the illicit drug trade.

Metro, which comprises representation from those three agencies as well as some federal lawmen, is the clearinghouse for drug busts conducted by the sheriff, NPD and DPS. Federal seizures are referred to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Unlike the federal government's fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, Metro's fiscal year is from January through December.

The amount of marijuana seized by Metro so far, is in line with a steady decline in pot seizures during the past 34 months.

But Lt. Gerardo Castillo, who heads Metro, said the last quarter of the year, or the winter months are the busiest for marijuana importers.

According to Metro records, as of August, lawmen in Santa Cruz County had confiscated 28,376 pounds of marijuana. In the 12 months of 2005, about 52,656 pounds of weed were seized. In 2006, 44,226 pounds of marijuana were nabbed.

While Castillo expects this year's numbers to increase as we draw closer to Christmas and New Year's, he said he doesn't anticipate the seizures to exceed the previous years' busts.

In 2005, he said, Metro was accepting numerous referral cases from federal agencies. Now, he said, the multi-agency task force is focusing more on community outreach for school-aged children and zeroing in on "candy store" dealers, whom he described as small-time peddlers "before they get too comfortable in the business."

As of August, Metro also reported confiscating 81.85 grams of cocaine, and 34 pounds of methamphetamine. Agents had seized 75 vehicles with a value of about $676,545.

In 2005, the task force made 460 arrests, seized 52,656 pounds of marijuana; 230 pounds of cocaine; 163 pounds of meth; and 2.31 pounds of heroin

Also, $45,118 in cash, and 205 vehicles valued at $1.3 million.

In 2006, Metro posted 407 arrests, 44,226 pounds of marijuana; 216 pounds of cocaine; 80.5 pounds of meth, and 20.3 pounds of heroin. Agents seized 96 vehicles worth an estimated $1.03 million and seized $145,853 in cash.
