I'd like to learn Hindi

What's the best method of learning this language on my own? Maybe with tapes and CD's? And a book? I mean, I'll eventually take a class on it. I was thinking Sanskrit but that doesn't have much useful application unless you're talking to yogis.

As with just about any subject, I think it depends on your learning style. If you learn better visually, a book. If you learn better auditorily, a CD or tape. If you learn better from a teacher in a class room type setting, then perhaps that is the road to go.

Probably with the language learning aspect of it, since I've never learned another tongue before, I might learn best from hearing it spoken. And I could always double-whammy with a book if I need it.

no offense, but i really doubt you'll be able to learn hindi from a book/cd...
it has a really different structure than english, and western languages in general... as you aren't already bi/multi-lingual, you won't have the "skill-sets" needed for learning a new language, let alone one that is so different than what you are used to. as well, since the alphabet is completely different than the roman/western alphabets, you would have the double-whammy of having to learn to read & write in a completely different script.
the only way to really learn it, i'd say (and this truthfully goes for learning any second language properly, in my experience) would be immersion.
if you just want to learn another language, i'd suggest starting with something more similar to english (romance languages, germanic languages, scandinavian languages). once you "learn" how to learn a new language, then you might have more luck with a sanskrit-based language.
i've heard kannada (the language spoke in the indian state of karnataka) all my life, and while i can understand a fair amount, can't speak it for a shit, and can't read it at all... i'm fluent in danish & norwegian, and can understand swedish and french, so have a good idea of how i can best learn foreign languages, but i know to gain fluency or even a good conversational level in kannada, i'll have to move to bangalore.
not trying to discourage you, just trying to be realistic...

Hey Krishna! (krishna krishna krishna ) What you say makes sense! I'll just have to get a CD to listen to it, and then eventually immerse myself in the language as you say. I have given some thought to learning other languages too. I hope I am not too old to pick up a new tongue, but the only way I'll know is to try.
Thanks for the advice!

it is but to really learn a language in depth and to really become fluent you have to go to the country that actually speaks that language and use that language first hand

Check out this website: http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/ There's quite a busy forum over there about learning languages. Very helpful.

Rosetta Stone is great but yeah you really have to have conversations with people that speak the language regularly to learn a new language. You could definitely learn a lot just from R.S. though.

The best way to learn Hindi is to learn it from Indian friends, combined with watching some Bollywood movies without subtitles if you're a bit further along the road.
