Cactus problem... Maybe someone can help?
    #7538805 - 10/20/07 10:26 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

So, I got a little impatient waiting for my cactus to dry on low heat in the oven, leading me to take about a fifth of what I was using and try a different drying method: desiccant.

I poured desiccant fresh from the microwave (where I dry used desiccant, changing the indicator crystals from red to blue) directly over the partially dried cactus in a sealed jar. I thought, "hey, this will work better than laying them out on the stuff, and the stuck-on silica gel should shake right off the cactus when it's dried."

I was very wrong. I was able to get about 90% of the completely embedded silica gel out of the dried cactus, but when I look closely, I can still see little bits of desiccant in the cracks, and finer particles of it still sticking to the cactus. It is virtually impossible to separate completely.

So what are the dangers of consuming a small amount of desiccant like this? Is there any process that would eliminate the desiccant during preparation? boiling? filtering?

I am planning on taking the extraction all the way to crystals, so would all that changing from polar to non-polar solvents eliminate the desiccant?

I have since been more patient drying the rest of my cactus, and found that the oven at 200 with the door open is fully sufficient to dry the green strips to cracker consistency.

But I'm stil stuck with this 25g of dried cactus with embedded in desiccant! Any suggestions?

yeah just extract from it and it should be fine.

also to dry heres a great method...
take 4 blocks and place a box fan laying down on them and make it so ther blocks prop up the 4 corners of the fan. make it so the fan blows down and place a window screen on top of that.
place your cut up cacti on that and it should work great.
