Getting a new laptop.....Mac or PC?

I've used PCs all my life, but I do alot of sound engineering/recording and photoshop, which I've heard do better on a Mac. Any other pros/cons you guys know of? Also... as far as brand of PC, any recommendations besides Dell?

I use PC for home and MAC for class (Graphic Design). Personally, if you find yourself using your computer more for recording/design/fun/etc. shoot for a MAC. The added expense is definitely worth it. After running Adobe programs on both PC and MAC - MAC definitely has PC smoked as far as Adobe is concerned.

Cool, thanks for the quick response.
I was thinking of getting a MacBook with Leopard and BootCamp, so I could switch between Windows XP and Mac interface... does BootCamp work well?

I don't need BootCamp yet, I'm still taking classes, So all I need is a flashdrive. I do know a few people who use bootcamp; haven't heard them complain so I'd say if you really think you need it, go out and get it. Although i don't know many people who really need to switch interface that often... most of my classmates/friends run MAC and only MAC - I'm one of the few pc users left, so I get all the technical questions thrown at me.

Mac all the way, in my opinion It's certainly more geared toward the artistic/fun side of things, I think Plus, you can run Micro$oft Windows XP/Vista/whatever on Mac's too although.. i have never had the slightest urge. there are Mac alternatives for every M$ product and a lot of them are free too

I love my Macbook Once I have enough money to throw around, I want to get a nice Apple desktop

Cool, I'm leaning toward the MacBook, but am worried that some of the programs I use most frequently can't run on Macs (Adobe Audition, Steinberg Nuendo) and that it would overall be more difficult to find and run small simple programs (such as VinylStudio to rip vinyls, Alcohol 120%, uTorrent, Anapod Explorer.. etc).
I like the concept of a Mac, and I dig its sleekness and all, but I feel like its going to fail me in terms of everyday use.
EDIT: I see Nuendo 4 will run on Mac. Audition 3 won't, but they released Soundbooth CS3 to try to compensate.

Don't count on it - most of the programs you run on your PC are compatible with MAC, and what's even better is that they have similar programs that perform better than most PC programs. I think once you get your MAC personalized to you, you'll realize what a great decision you made.

Thanks for the advice man... you're definitely making me lean farther toward a Mac. I'm looking at a list of Mac programs now just to see what there is to offer.

I am a life long mac user. But I care little about multimedia. I love them because the new mac os X has a log of BSD Unix user land components. Porting software from Linux, BSD, or Unix is extremely easy. So you get some of the popular commercial software with loads of the noncommercial software. Most of the best F/OSS has been ported over.
But, my computing needs are a little different.
The hardware is also good of good quality for the price. And I also have a little sentimental attachment to them as my first computers where macs.

I have a Macbook Pro thread going on the first or second page in this forum. GF just got one, and it's pretty nice. I put bootcamp on it, and it runs flawless.
I'd hold off a week or 2 and just get the Leopard OS that will come with the new macs, which has a bootcamp utility built in, ready to go. I'm not sure how much you'd lug this thing around, but the Pro can get pretty damn HOT. probably from the video card, but that C2D cpu ain't exactly very cool itself.
To be honest, i personaly find it to be a very nice laptop, but very very overpriced. If money is not an issue, go for it. Just dont cry when you see an excellent Toshiba with the same specs for half the price in the next week's paper.

linux is quite compatible. Mac's cost so much , but if you can afford it, or think that the extra grand is worth it go ahead

i didnt pay for it so i cant complain but i mean go ahead and figure that youll never have to worry about viruses or serious crashes or anything of that sort. theyre just vastly superior machines and that does warrant higher costs but i do admit they go a tad overboard.

Linux will crash less then a Mac. And the hardware is no different, I mean in terms of power or performance, so all you are paying for is the software. And honestly I don't even like the OS, although I havent given much time to the new Mac OS's. I hated their old ones.

My Macbook has never crashed :knockonwood: The Mac OS X works so elegantly
Isn't it based on the same shell that Linux is based on? Or something similar to that?
Mac OS X is a lot easier to understand, in my opinion, than any Linux distro I've ever come across.

Yea it is easier. To me I simply find it a shame that Apple thinks they can charge that much. People pay it I guess, but as an Open Sourcer I find them more annoying then Microsoft, who in comparison seems pretty reasonable.

Yeah, the price is the only issue I've ever had with Apple. But I don't mind supporting Apple's great products, if I can afford them
